A dark psy classic | Enter the world of dark and eerie psychedelia...
A subgenre of psytrance: darkpsy.
Although it’s a loosely defined genre with a variety of styles, you can think of it simply as psytrance with a dark atmosphere.
This time, I’ve selected some classic tracks from the world of darkpsy.
Since many of these tracks have a sinister, eerie vibe, fans of genres like noise and gothic metal will also find plenty to enjoy.
There are also many tracks with pounding, resonant low end, so bassheads should have a great time too.
Now, please take your time and enjoy the world of darkpsy…

Masterpieces of Dark Psychedelia | Into the dark and eerie world of psych… (11–20)
The Dark Side of PsytranceZ-KREL

When you hear “dark psy,” many people probably imagine psychedelic trance with elements of noise music or a gothic tone.
Of course, it’s true that there are many tracks like that, but some have a rock flavor as well.
Among those, the one I especially recommend is “The Dark Side of Psytrance.” It kicks off with a distortion-heavy electric guitar intro, sending your voltage soaring right from the start.

When it comes to globally mainstream trance, psychedelic trance is the one that comes to mind.
Darkpsy, a genre derived from it, does contain elements of psychedelic trance, but as the scene has evolved recently, there’s been a tendency for it to lean more heavily toward noise music-like elements.
Some listeners may find that recent trend a bit hard to enjoy.
For those people, I recommend the release Dirty Tricks.
It skews more toward psychedelic trance, making it a great pick for anyone who wants something you can really groove to.
Divine Moments of TruthAstrix, Loud & The Lost Secret Door

Have you ever felt a sense of fear from ultra-low humming like throat singing? Especially in choral throat singing, you can feel both sacredness and a touch of eeriness, right? This track, ‘Divine Moments of Truth,’ skillfully processes that kind of throat singing and multi-voice choruses, channeling them into dark psychedelia.
That alone makes it a compelling piece, but in the latter half it layers effects onto the throat-singing-like vocals and adds arrangements reminiscent of dubstep electronica.
With several renowned composers collaborating, it packs a variety of charms into a single, standout track.

Darkpsy is a genre with a very vague definition.
If the listener feels a dark atmosphere, then as long as it’s psychedelic trance, it gets classified as darkpsy.
In that sense, I think “Becoming Insane” is a track that divides opinion.
With its unique horror flavor and the heavy emphasis on electronic synths, the classification can vary widely depending on the listener.
In any case, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a cool track, so definitely give it a listen.
Logical ChangeReality Frame

This is a bit sudden, but what do you think is the appeal of dark psy? It varies from person to person, of course, but the biggest point is probably the fusion of dark, horror-tinged melodies with electronic trance—elements that normally wouldn’t intersect.
From that perspective, “Logical Change” is an outstanding work, channeling a macabre atmosphere into electronic music with remarkable balance.
It’s not a flashy track, but the quality of the arrangement is extremely high, so be sure to give it a listen.
In conclusion
This time I’ve put together a selection of dark psy classics that exude a suspicious, eerie vibe—did you find any new favorites? Unlike gothic metal or noise, dark psy is appealing because it doesn’t drag your mood down; instead, it can feel awakening while you listen.
At Rug Music, we also feature a variety of other psytrance styles.
