Children eagerly awaiting Christmas.

To make them even more excited, we’ve gathered ideas for Christmas crafts you’ll want to make in December with 2-year-olds.

From Santa Claus and reindeer to Christmas trees and wreaths, there are plenty of wonderful craft ideas that make the most of children’s free expression.

Be sure to use these as inspiration and try making them together!

Because the children’s creations are treated as “artworks,” the term used in the main text is “制作 (seisaku).”

Salt painting

As Christmas approaches, both children and adults get excited, don’t they? In this craft, we’ll make a Christmas tree using salt.

Use a brush to paint white glue in the shape of a tree.

Before it dries, sprinkle salt over it and shake off the excess.

Then drop water-diluted paint onto the salt—the colors will spread like neon lights.

Let it dry thoroughly, and it’s done.

It’s also fun to touch and enjoy the texture.

You’ll end up with a colorful Christmas tree, perfect for the holiday season.

When it comes to what Santa puts presents in at Christmas, it’s got to be a stocking, right? This time, we’ll share a craft idea using pastels.

Just looking at the soft, gentle colors of pastels can be soothing, can’t it? Here’s how to make it: grate the pastels using a mesh or grater to create powder.

This step is fun too—almost like playing make-believe.

Next, dab the pastel powder with a piece of kitchen paper and apply the color onto drawing paper.

If you layer the pastels, the colors blend together to make a cute stocking.

Finally, cut the drawing paper into the shape of a stocking, and you’re done.

Let’s make a one-of-a-kind stocking and get everyone excited for Christmas!

On Christmas Day, the ones who really shine as Santa’s helpers are the reindeer, right? For this reindeer craft made with origami and handprints, if you draw the reindeer outline on construction paper beforehand, it makes it easier for the children to stick on the torn origami pieces.

Creating the reindeer’s antlers using handprints is a great moment for kids to feel the size of their own hands and notice their growth—highly recommended.

If you make the handprints on a separate sheet of paper and then paste them on, the reindeer’s antlers will have more dimension.

Once the reindeer is finished, don’t forget to add its signature red nose at the end.

Isn’t it exciting to make Christmas decorations using everyday paper plates? For this paper-plate Christmas tree and bell, you’ll paint the plates and punch holes to thread string through.

For the bell, choosing slightly larger jingle bells that make a clear sound is key.

For the tree, cut the plate into four equal pieces, arrange them into a tree shape, and add decorations as you like.

The method is simple, and it’s a project that really lets you feel the Christmas spirit, so give it a try.

Reading a Christmas picture book before or after the activity is also recommended to heighten the seasonal mood.

Spinning snowflakes

Would you like to make a snowflake that spins when you press it with your finger? It’s great as a Christmas wall decoration, and also recommended as a toy for kids to play with.

Prepare three strips of construction paper cut into long, thin pieces, arrange them into a snowflake silhouette, and staple them at the center.

After attaching origami paper or decorating with pens and colored pencils, gently shift the construction paper inward a little—and it’s done.

For two-year-olds, sticking on pieces of paper and drawing freely makes this a fun craft!

A mask that lets you become Santa

Let’s enjoy Christmas by making masks that turn cute kids into little Santas! First, cut out the center of a paper plate.

To create Santa’s beard, cut the edge in a wavy pattern.

Prepare a construction paper Santa hat, then let the children decorate it with round stickers or finger stamps.

Finally, glue the hat onto the paper plate and you’re done! You can use it like a face-in-the-hole panel or thread an elastic band to wear it.

It’ll look adorable if everyone takes a group photo together!

Stained-glass-style Christmas decoration

Here’s an introduction to a craft inspired by stained glass, where beautiful images and patterns appear.

Place a tree made from black construction paper on a piece of parchment paper, apply OPP tape, then peel it off the sheet.

Stick on cut pieces of colored film freely, and after applying OPP tape over the top, trim away the excess to finish.

When you hold it up to the light, the vivid colors of the colored film shine through and look gorgeous.

Try making various motifs like Christmas trees, snowmen, and snowflakes.
