[For Toddlers] A Big Roundup of Craft Ideas to Enjoy at Christmas

Speaking of December, Christmas—the holiday children look forward to every year—finally arrives.

Getting presents is exciting, of course, but the sparkling trees and lights, and the reindeer and Santa Claus that create a thrilling atmosphere are also part of the fun.

So this time, we’ve gathered plenty of craft ideas for preschoolers that make the most of those festive motifs.

If your Christmas craft ideas are starting to feel stale, or you’re looking for something new, please use these as inspiration.

Because the things children make are regarded as works of art, we use the term “制作 (seisaku),” meaning “production/creation,” in the text.

Advent calendar

Around Christmas, lots of cute advent calendars line the store shelves, don’t they? This advent calendar is very simple to make: turn origami or construction paper into loops, link as many as the number of countdown days, and stick the dates on with round stickers.

Be sure to arrange the date stickers so that the larger numbers are at the top.

Once you attach a Santa face or a reindeer face to the top, your handmade advent calendar is complete.

You can use it to count the days until a Christmas party, to count down to winter break, or enjoy it for various events.

Reindeer Clock

Reindeer Clock

How about making a reindeer-face themed watch out of a paper cup? It’s a perfect little accessory to go with Santa or reindeer costumes at a Christmas party.

Draw the watch band and the reindeer antlers on the paper cup and cut them out together with the cup’s bottom.

Write the numbers on the bottom piece of the cup, then attach sticker eyes and a nose.

Use a twist tie or similar to represent the clock hands, and finish by shaping the band—your watch is complete.

Try a Christmas craft by changing the color and size of the paper cups to enjoy different creative variations.

A snow globe where the snow swirls when you blow on it

When the weather gets cold around Christmas, there are many places where it snows.

This time, we’ll show you how to make a snow globe with falling snow that’s perfect for the Christmas season.

The key is to start by putting colorful foam beads into a plastic cup.

Next, attach the items you want to display inside to a piece of thick paper, then seal the lid with glue.

Insert a straw into the side of the cup and blow air inside to make the beads swirl up like snow—it’s lots of fun.

However, if you use a straw as-is, there’s a risk of accidentally inhaling the beads, so be sure to attach a mesh, such as a drain strainer net, to the end of the straw before use.

Twig wreath

Here’s a twig wreath that’s perfect for making by hand with children.

It’s lovely to go out on a sunny winter day, gather small branches, and enjoy crafting together! First, arrange the twigs into a pentagon and secure the overlapping parts with pipe cleaners.

Next, decorate it with your favorite yarn or sparkly pipe cleaners.

Adding ribbons or pinecones also looks great.

Finish it off by attaching a fishing line for hanging, and it’s done.

It’s a perfect craft idea to make the most of children’s free and creative ideas!

A mysterious reindeer with a moving face

Reindeer pull Santa’s sleigh and are especially busy at Christmas.

This time, we’ll show you how to make a cute craft where a reindeer’s head wobbles.

First, take a paper cup for the reindeer’s face, cut it horizontally in half, and attach pipe cleaners to make the antlers.

The key point is to make a spring from origami for the wobbly neck part.

Attach the spring to the bottom of another paper cup, place the reindeer face over the top, and you’re done.

Using brown paper cups makes it look more like a reindeer, so that’s recommended.

Tissue paper Christmas tree

Christmas Craft (7): Bouncy, wobbling stars with an adorable design ♡ A 3D craft using tissue paper! Individual mini trees for each child [Nursery/Kindergarten]
Tissue paper Christmas tree

This is a Christmas tree made with tissue paper, perfect for decorating various events.

The fluffy, three-dimensional look unique to tissue paper and the way the star ornament attached to a pipe cleaner sways make it a project that will spark children’s curiosity both while they’re making it and after it’s finished.

Another recommendation is that it can be made using easily accessible materials, such as items from 100-yen shops or pieces cut from milk cartons.

When children open the tissue paper, please have an adult help them.

Christmas boots

For a Christmas craft, how about a Christmas boot motif? Use construction paper in your favorite color, cut it into the shape of a boot, and punch holes around the edge to thread yarn through.

It helps if an adult first draws a boot on the colored paper and stars on origami paper.

The children can cut them out, draw their favorite pictures, and add the stars.

Finally, thread yarn through the holes made with a hole punch.

You could put a letter to Santa or a small gift inside the finished boot!
