A roundup of unusual transformable guitars from around the world (21–30)
Tatami Guitar

It’s a guitar with a body made of tatami—a peculiar shape and a surprising choice of material.
It seems to be an original creation by a tatami craftsman who loves music.
I wonder if it produces a softer sound.
From the video, it looks fine to play, but I’m curious whether it’s sturdy enough.
Elephant Guitar
Speaking of unconventional guitars, many people might think of the ZO-3, the elephant-shaped guitar.
This one is the Tomoyasu Hotei ZO-3 model.
There are also models for hide and Van Halen.
With a built-in amp and compact size, it’s popular among beginners and women.
Surfing guitar
One of Japan’s leading fusion guitarists, Masayoshi Takanaka, uses a “surfing guitar” in his live shows.
It’s an enormous instrument made by turning an actual surfboard into a guitar.
You don’t often see a guitar this large.
Bich

One of the many non-standard guitars released by B.C.
Rich is the Bich.
It’s not just about the body shape—on the treble side, four strings are doubled, making it a 10-string guitar in total.
The design takes full advantage of the unique shape, for example by placing tuning pegs near the bridge, resulting in a very thoughtfully engineered instrument.
Blade Runner

The modified guitar with holes in the body and head used in Aerosmith and RUN DMC’s “Walk This Way” music video is the Guild Blade Runner.
It’s a design that puts an extra twist on the already popular unconventional shapes of the 1980s.
Mermaid Guitar

This is the Mermaid Guitar, crafted by acoustic guitar maker Andy Manson, which astonished the world.
The guitar’s body is the full figure of a mermaid, nearly human-sized—and what’s amazing is that it can actually be played properly.
Moderne

When it comes to the originators of radical-shaped guitars, Gibson’s Flying V and Explorer come to mind, but there was actually another guitar designed at the same time.
That was the Moderne, and even today it has a very distinctive shape.
The prevailing belief is that it ultimately wasn’t produced at the time, but it was in fact released by Gibson in the 1980s.
