DIR EN GREY is a five-piece rock band that captivates fans with a sound that fuses genres like metal and hardcore with a variety of flavors, including folk music.
Their 23rd major-label single, ‘Hageshisa to, Kono Mune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami,’ makes a strong impression with its opening that pairs a loud rock ensemble with melodious vocals.
While much of the track is built around growls, the melody weaves in a wide range of vocal techniques, which further amplifies the impact of the shouts.
It’s an aggressive number that draws you into DIR EN GREY’s distinctive dark worldview.

Their fourth major single, released in 1999, features lyrics that are extreme with an S&M theme, but the sound is somewhat more accessible.
The track also includes a bass solo section.
This song was also performed on Music Station, though the performance was reportedly not as provocative as when they performed “Zan -残-.”

DIR EN GREY, who captivate fans with a unique worldview that fuses a wide range of genres.
Their song “Myaku” was released on February 16, 2000, and its music video—reflecting their visual kei roots—became a hot topic.
The work’s appeal lies in its balance of accessibility and literary depth, even as it tackles the weighty theme of cannibalism.
Sonically, it begins with an eerie intro and shifts dynamically into a powerful, beautiful melody.
In their own way of portraying the darker sides of humanity, DIR EN GREY leave a deep impression on listeners.
In particular, “Myaku” showcases the band’s high level of musicianship and vocalist Kyo’s exceptional expressive power, conveying their persistent spirit of musical exploration.
Evoking unease and madness, this track is recommended for those who want to delve into profound emotions or who believe in the power of music.
Dead TreeDIR EN GREY

Included as the ninth track on the 5th album “Withering to death.” Due to its dissonant sound and worldview, it was regarded as the core piece of the album, and a music video was later produced.
The MV, themed around war with sepia-toned visuals, further enhances the song.
reasonDIR EN GREY

A mid-tempo track included on DIR EN GREY’s second album, MACABRE, released in 2000.
At the beginning of the song, the protagonist jumps from the top floor of a building and reflects on their life.
It’s a striking piece in which they end their own life with their own hands, unable to let go of their lingering feelings for a loved one.
