Simple handmade toys that will delight your beloved dog

Even when you buy toys for your beloved dog, they often get destroyed right away, don’t they?

Dogs relieve stress by chewing, so you can’t simply tell them not to chew.

Many households are likely looking for durable toys or ones that are easy to replace.

If you could make toys easily at home, both dogs and owners would be grateful, right?

In this article, we introduce ideas for making homemade toys for dogs.

We also feature toys that dogs will love, including educational (enrichment) types, so be sure to make some and enjoy seeing your dog’s delighted reaction!

Believe it or not, you can make a toy just from items you have at home.

First, prepare an old T-shirt you no longer need.

If it has buttons, remove them.

Next, cut off the sleeves and tie the ends tightly.

Then stuff the rest of the T-shirt inside, secure the back with a rubber band, and you’re done.

If you want to make it look cuter, add eye pieces to make it look like a fish! Also, if you use the owner’s T-shirt, your dog will like it because it smells familiar.

Nose work mat

If you want to give your pet play that’s closer to hunting, a nose work mat is perfect.

Making one is very simple.

First, buy a sink mat and some felt at a 100-yen shop.

Be sure to choose a kitchen/sink mat with a mesh design.

Then just tie strips of felt through the holes, and you’re done.

You can also substitute a gardening mat or similar.

Also, be careful: if the felt knots are loose, there’s a risk of accidental ingestion.

Many dogs love bells, right? So here’s something I’d like to introduce: a fabric ball with a bell inside.

It’s made in a way similar to a beanbag and is easy to craft.

First, prepare six types of fabric you like.

Then cut them into diamond shapes and sew them together as you would when making a beanbag.

Before closing it up, add a bell and some stuffing, and you’re done.

Also, plastic bells tend to ring more easily! By the way, for those who aren’t sure how to make the ball, there are websites that share printable patterns, so be sure to look for them.

When it comes to classic dog toys, chew ropes are a staple.

The problem is they wear out quickly, which can make toy costs add up.

That’s why I recommend making your own chew rope out of felt.

Felt is great for nose work, and best of all, it keeps costs down.

Once you learn the braiding method, it’s easy to remake whenever needed.

Check out YouTube or websites for detailed tutorials on how to braid them.

It’s also fun to show some personality by choosing different felt colors.

Some people want to make toys but aren’t good at sewing, right? For those folks, I recommend trying a donut toy made from a sock.

It has just the right level of difficulty, so it’s perfect for learning sewing basics.

First, prepare an old sock and cut off the toe.

Then roll it up into a ring, and once it looks like a donut, thread it with string.

There’s only one place you need to sew, so it’s reassuring for beginners.

By the way, depending on the sock’s pattern, you can make a donut toy in the style you like.

Rope toy

If you want to make a toy that’s hard to break, I recommend a rope toy.

First, buy a thick rope at a home improvement store.

Next, tie one end of the rope into a ball.

Then, tie the other end into a loop big enough to fit your hand through, and you’re done.

This way, it won’t easily break even if it’s pulled or chewed.

If it still gets destroyed, use a thicker rope to make it sturdier.

Give it a try!

If you don’t want to sew or craft but still want to make an educational toy, using an empty ice cream container is perfect.

You often see ice cream sold in fruit-shaped containers, right? Just save that container, put some treats inside, and you’re done.

When your dog rolls the toy around, the lid will eventually come off and the treats will fall out.

Even dogs that don’t like exercise will enjoy this.

One note of caution: be sure to wash and rinse the container thoroughly.
