[Handmade Toys] Fun to Make! A Collection of Pull-Along Toy Ideas

Have you ever heard of a buzzing button spinner?

It’s a fun toy that spins and makes a buzzing sound when you pull the strings on both sides.

Some of you might have made one when you were kids.

In this article, I’d like to share some DIY ideas for pull-to-spin toys.

We’ve got lots of ideas that babies (from 0 years), elementary school kids, and even adults can enjoy.

You can make them using everyday materials, recyclables, or items from the 100-yen shop, so give it a try!

And after you make them, there are fun ways to play together with friends too!

A toy for pulling on various materials

A toy for pulling on various materials

This toy lets children pull on items made from different materials.

It helps develop their sense of touch, so it’s recommended for young kids.

Prepare a basket with holes that you can thread strings through.

Thread the strings through the basket and attach various materials to the ends of the strings—for example, bells, sponges, stretchy keychains, or cardboard toilet paper rolls.

When they pull the bell, it makes a sound; when they pull the sponge, they feel its softness.

They can enjoy a variety of sensations all at once.

Heart Cracker

Here’s an introduction to a heart-shaped cracker launcher that’s perfect for events.

The pulling motion used to launch it also helps children practice the hand movement they need for dressing themselves.

Prepare a paper cup with a hole in the bottom and attach a balloon whose rounded top has been trimmed off.

Be sure to tie the balloon’s neck securely.

Then just put heart-shaped packing material inside the cup, and you’re done! When you pull the balloon’s neck, the hearts pop out like a party cracker.

It’s easier to clean up than confetti, so give it a try and have fun!

The movement of the rings is mesmerizing! Let me introduce a pull-chain idea.

All you need are a spring holder and colorful rings.

You can easily get the materials at 100-yen shops, so it’s a highly recommended idea.

There are no complicated rules or mechanisms—just pull the spring holder to play! It’s fun to watch the colorful rings spiral down as the pulled spring holder spins.

If you attach a card ring, you can hook it in various places and play with it too!

Pull-ring toss

With this loop with a string attached, you can easily enjoy a ring toss game.

First, roll up some newspaper to make a ring.

Wrap it with vinyl tape from the outside to reinforce it.

It’s also recommended to decorate it by adding masking tape or similar on top.

Then, attach a piece of yarn or another string to the ring, and it’s complete! Use building blocks or crumpled newspaper as targets, place them in various spots, aim at the targets and toss the ring, then pull it back to yourself with the string.

Draw a line to clearly show where to throw from.

A hand that moves freely when you pull the string

This is a fun toy where a paper hand moves freely by pulling strings.

First, cut construction paper into the shape of a hand.

Apply double-sided tape along each finger, then attach short pieces of straw—each with a string threaded through it—lined up along the fingers.

Gather all the strings around the wrist area, stick a label or sticker on the end of each string, and you’re done! When you pull a sticker, the corresponding finger moves.

If you pull all the strings to move the fingers, you can even make a fist! It’s an easy, enjoyable toy to make, so give it a try.

Paper Cup Catcher

Introducing the Paper Cup Catcher, a cooperative game for two players! Prepare several paper cups of the same size.

Tie four strands of raffia string (or similar ribbon) to a single rubber band, and you’re ready to go.

Each player holds two strands, and together you use the rubber band to grab a paper cup from a row and stack it onto another cup placed beside it.

Adjust the pulling tension and coordinate your strength to clear the game as a team! It’s also fun to prepare lots of cups and compete to see which pair can stack the most within a time limit.

buzzing top

[Wakuwaku-san’s Craft Workshop] Let’s make a “whirring spinning top” out of a milk carton!
buzzing top

Here’s an idea for making a whirligig (spinning top) from a milk carton.

You’ll need the bottom of a milk carton, an awl, scissors, twine, a permanent marker, and tape.

First, use the awl to make two holes in the bottom of the milk carton, spaced 1 centimeter apart.

Thread the twine through the two holes and tie the ends together.

If the twine is hard to thread, put a bit of tape on the tip to make it easier.

If you color the milk carton with a permanent marker or add stickers, the spinning top will look colorful and fun when it spins! Enjoy customizing the shape and design, too!

Tree-climbing little monkey

Play with full enthusiasm! Here’s a fun idea for a climbing monkey craft.

You’ll need a paper cup, straws, scissors, a picture/illustration, glue or double-sided tape, and kite string.

First, cut out the bottom of the paper cup.

Prepare two straws cut to 5 cm each, attach them parallel to each other on the inside of the cup, and thread the kite string through them.

Once you stick the illustration onto the cup, it’s done! When you pull the kite string alternately, the monkey appears to climb—it’s a delightful idea.

Give it a try!

Balloon walking pet

Let’s enjoy the walk we’ve been dreaming of! Here are some balloon walking-pet ideas.

You’ll need balloons, construction paper, glue, scissors, double-sided tape, and ribbon.

Many children probably dream of having a pet and taking it for a walk, right? In that case, try making a balloon walking pet.

Fold strips of construction paper back and forth to make legs and attach them to the balloon, then add eyes and ears made from construction paper.

Tie on a ribbon, and it’s done! Try making your favorite animals like elephants, rabbits, dogs, or cats.

Watching them float and bob around is so cute.

Pull the ears and it makes a sound! Here’s an idea for click-clack animals.

You’ll need a kraft paper cup, a pen, two plastic bottle caps, scissors, and tape.

First, leaving 1.5 cm at the top, make four evenly spaced cuts in the paper cup.

Fold two of the cut sections and trim them with scissors to create ears.

Attach the plastic bottle caps with tape to the sections you didn’t fold—and you’re done.

Draw your favorite animal and make some noise!
