[2026] Drum and Bass Masterpieces: From Classics to the Latest Hits
If you’re not very interested in dance music, you might have no idea what “drum and bass” means.
Drum and bass, one of the so-called electronic music genres said to have evolved from jungle, emerged around the mid-1990s, and by the late ’90s there were hit songs that employed drum and bass techniques.
In the early 2020s, Gen Z artists like PinkPantheress went viral with distinctive sounds that incorporated drum and bass, and the genre continues to evolve in its own way today.
Here we introduce some iconic drum and bass tracks, from timeless classics to recent standouts.

[2026] Iconic Drum and Bass Tracks: From Classics to the Latest Hits (11–20)
SignalFresh!

DJ Fresh, a member of the legendary UK drum and bass group Bad Company UK and the creator of many classic tracks.
As one of the key figures in the history of British dance music—spanning drum and bass and dubstep—following his work is essentially a deep dive into the drum and bass genre itself.
In this piece, we’ll introduce Signal, a classic likely released for the first time under his solo name on the prestigious RAM Records.
Released as a 12-inch single in 2003, Signal is a fan favorite among drum and bass listeners, characterized by an overall serious and dark atmosphere.
From a lengthy intro featuring spacey synths and unsettling noise, the track delivers a masterful transition: after a brief moment of silence, a barrage of breakbeats surges in, heightening the tension.
It’s stunning—on the dancefloor, of course, but also the kind of track that, if you listen to it alone at night in your room, might just transport you to another world.
Parallel Universe4hero

Formed in 1989, the British electronic music duo 4hero are indispensable originators not only of jungle and drum and bass, but of the UK club music scene as a whole.
Alongside LTJ Bukem, the two Black British members—Mark Clair and Dennis McFarlane—have been active since the very earliest days of jungle and drum and bass.
Their second album, Parallel Universe, released in 1995, is widely regarded as a classic of the drum and bass genre.
The track discussed here is the title cut: the interplay of intricate breakbeats and cool, floating electronic tones is strikingly intelligent and beautiful.
In 1998, they signed to Giles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label—Peterson being virtually the father of acid jazz—and released the highly acclaimed masterpiece Two Pages.
If you want to hear 4hero’s sound taken even further, be sure to check that out as well!
Temper TemperGoldie

Goldie, the first true star of the drum and bass world, is an artist who took the music scene by storm with his striking looks.
Widely regarded—controversies and all—as both a living witness to and an emperor of drum and bass, there’s no denying his achievement in bringing the genre to the wider world.
His 1995 debut album Timeless is hailed as a landmark masterpiece, a towering classic of drum and bass.
In this piece, I’ll introduce the much-loved track Temper Temper, which features Noel Gallagher, Oasis’s guitarist and principal songwriter.
Though it’s drum and bass at its core, Temper Temper boldly incorporates Noel’s guitar work and carries a shade of industrial influence.
Released as a single from Goldie’s second album, Saturnz Return, in 1998, it might be a tough listen for diehard Oasis fans, but younger listeners who love both rock and club music may find it refreshingly new.
Don’t forget to check out the MV too—the sight of Goldie tearing around with a bat, looking absolutely menacing, is downright terrifying!
The NineBad Company

Formed in the UK in 1998, Bad Company UK is a drum and bass group that produced many classic tracks in the underground scene.
They went on hiatus in 2005 to focus on solo work, but pulled off a miraculous reunion in 2016 and have continued to tour and stay active into the 2020s.
One of the labels run by the members, Breakbeat Kaos, launched the drum and bass band Pendulum; both their releases and their activities themselves have played a key role in the scene.
Bad Company UK’s explosive debut and signature track, The Nine, released in 1998, has been hailed by music media as the greatest drum and bass track of all time and is a universally acclaimed DnB anthem among critics and fans alike.
Listening again, its construction is strikingly simple, yet elements like the tight, driving beat that suddenly seems to stumble and collapse mid-pattern feel carefully engineered—an incredibly cool touch.
It’s an essential track for understanding drum and bass, so make sure you give it a proper listen!
QuestShimon & Andy C

Andy C, the British artist who heads the prestigious and long-established drum and bass label RAM Records and serves as a leading figure in the scene.
The fact that he founded the label at just 16 speaks volumes about his precocious talent.
Still incredibly busy today as a top-tier DJ, Andy C remains deeply involved in the evolution of drum and bass—so much so that following his trajectory is almost like tracing the genre’s history itself.
Let me introduce “Quest,” a 12-inch single released in 1996 on his own label, produced in collaboration with fellow British DJ/producer Shimon during Andy C’s younger days.
Despite its overall simplicity, the track is strikingly cool, pairing airy electronic textures with tight breakbeats.
Considering its release year, it stands as an important testament to early drum and bass, showcasing the creative talents of both Andy C and Shimon.
I also recommend the B-side, “Night Flight,” which features a more primitive, jungle-inspired structure.
HeroesRoni Size & Reprazent

Bristol, England—birthplace of the genre known as trip-hop and home to many distinctive artists and groups.
Often dubbed the “Bristol Sound” after the city itself, Bristol has influenced a wide range of music scenes.
Among its greats is Roni Size, a seminal artist from Bristol who is renowned as a key producer and DJ in the UK drum and bass scene.
Under the name Roni Size & Reprazent, he released the album New Forms in 1997—a masterpiece that received high acclaim, including winning the Mercury Prize, often cited as the most prestigious music award in the UK.
Its uniquely crafted drum and bass, which incorporates live instruments like bass and drums, creates a pleasantly weightless feel; the production, infused with jazz and soul influences, exudes a mood entirely different from dance music that moves you in a purely primitive way.
First-time listeners are sure to be astonished.
The track featured in this article is the classic Heroes, which introduces a melody sung by a female vocalist.
Hearing it may leave you surprised that this, too, is drum and bass.

Touch (ft. Catching Cairo)Hybrid Minds

Hybrid Minds are a duo that captivates the world with their beautiful melodies.
Based in England, they’re known as leading figures of vocal-driven drum and bass known as “liquid funk.” This work is an achingly emotional number themed around the warmth and salvation found in human touch.
Its crystalline piano intertwines with the vocals of featured artist Catching Cairo, gently enveloping the listener’s emotions.
Released as a single in June 2016, it marked the first milestone launch of their own label.
With over 15 million views on YouTube, it remains a beloved classic.
It’s also recommended for those who aren’t into hard-hitting dance music; if you listen to it alone on a contemplative night, it’s sure to cleanse your heart.
