Love of a Summer Day — Percy Faith — A Summer Place — Percy Faith
Love in the SummerPāshī Feisu gakudan

Easy listening is a type of ambient music, and I think it’s rarely unpleasant even when it’s just playing in the background.

For that reason, it’s actually a genre with surprising depth.

In particular, I think everyone has heard the classic piece “Theme from A Summer Place” at least once somewhere.

In the MoodGuren Mirā Ōkesutora

Big band jazz performance: In the Mood by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific, Pacific Showcase — In the Mood by Glenn Miller Orchestra

A bright, sprightly swing rhythm resonates pleasantly, making listeners feel happy—this is a true classic.

The smooth, sophisticated sound unique to the Glenn Miller Orchestra seeps deep into the heart.

Released in August 1939, the piece shines with the saxophone section’s beautiful harmonies and dance floor–minded arrangement.

A gem also featured in the 1941 film “Sun Valley Serenade” and the 1954 “The Glenn Miller Story.” Perfect for creating warm, uplifting moments—whether during a quick refresh between work or study, or at a home party with friends—it continues to be loved by many to this day.

The White LoversFuransisu Rei

This song is the soundtrack of a famous French film.

It was a huge hit at the time, and you can still hear it on TV and elsewhere.

That’s probably why I have a faint memory of listening to it.

Its distinctly French melodic development makes it well worth a listen.

Recommended easy listening: relaxing, soothing BGM (11–20)

Madonna’s JewelNini Rosso

At first glance it may sound like an old-fashioned mood kayō song, but that’s inevitable because it’s a melancholy piece.

Songs that convey the charm and nostalgia of the ’60s and ’70s will surely feel nostalgic to today’s baby boomer generation.

The MomentKenny G (Kenī Jī)

This white man is a well-known artist in the worlds of jazz and fusion.

I think the piece falls into the easy listening genre, yet despite its grandeur, it isn’t overly assertive.

The ease of listening is a hallmark of the music he creates.

An Encounter in ParisFuransisu Rei

"A Man and a Woman: Vivre pour Vivre" Francis Lai
An Encounter in ParisFuransisu Rei

A blissful sonic world woven from luscious melodies and sophisticated arrangements.

The beautiful themes Francis Lai composed for Claude Lelouch’s 1967 French film gracefully illuminate a romantic, adult love story.

Released in many countries as the film’s soundtrack, this piece has long been cherished as a gem that deftly incorporates elements of easy listening and soul jazz.

Perfect for enjoying a book in a calm mood or as a relaxed afternoon tea-time BGM, it will create a soothing, comforting moment.

East of EdenVictor Young Orchestra (Vikutā Yangu)

This is an easy-listening version of a classic film from years past.

Since East of Eden features James Dean, one of the greatest icons in cinema, I think many people remember this piece for that reason alone.

It symbolizes the era when movies and their music were at their happiest.
