[Ultra Loud!!!] A song with intense growls

Everyone has probably heard the word “ganaru” at least once.

However, many people may only think of it as meaning “to shout loudly.”

In reality, “ganaru” refers to delivering a shout (vocal growl/rasp) in singing.

There are many kinds of shouts, and how they sound can vary greatly depending on the artist.

This time, we’ve picked out superb works that let you savor the appeal of “ganari”/“shout” vocals.

We’re also featuring the latest tracks, so be sure to check them out.

[Ultra Loud!!!] Intensely raspy/harsh vocal songs (1–10)

Shut up.Ado

A punk rock sound that thrusts to the forefront, with a roar-like vocal that sent shockwaves through the music industry and a forceful, almost violent melody.

This shocking work channels, with explosive energy, the sense of dissonance young people feel toward society and their determination to resist the expectations and oppression around them.

As Ado’s major-label debut, the track was released digitally in October 2020 and received high acclaim across the board, including winning the Breakthrough Song at the M Television VMAJ 2021.

It’s a song that gives courage—powerfully pushing the backs of those who struggle to express their true feelings and worry about others’ eyes and judgments.

SILVERRIZE

RIZE’s fiery performance shakes the soul with its ferocious sound and powerful playing! Anchored by a heavy drum beat and razor-sharp guitar riffs, it crafts a unique world where strength and tenderness intertwine.

Packed with explosive energy and a strong message of unwavering conviction, this track was released in March 2017 and was used as the ending theme for the TV Tokyo anime Gintama.

Also included on the album THUNDERBOLT: The Thunderbolt Returns, this song is sure to resonate as an anthem that gives you a strong push forward when you want to face hardships and keep moving ahead.

Among those looking to blow off steam at karaoke, many probably want to belt out songs at the top of their lungs and feel refreshed.

For people like that, we recommend ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION’s classic “Rewrite.” It’s one of their most widely known tracks—familiar even to many who aren’t fans.

The highlight, of course, is the chorus.

Let your feelings ride the exhilarating, up-tempo rock sound and shout it out without holding back.

Fierceness, and the searing darkness tangled within this chestDIR EN GREY

DIR EN GREY is a five-piece rock band that captivates fans with a sound that fuses genres like metal and hardcore with a variety of flavors, including folk music.

Their 23rd major-label single, ‘Hageshisa to, Kono Mune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami,’ makes a strong impression with its opening that pairs a loud rock ensemble with melodious vocals.

While much of the track is built around growls, the melody weaves in a wide range of vocal techniques, which further amplifies the impact of the shouts.

It’s an aggressive number that draws you into DIR EN GREY’s distinctive dark worldview.

single-minded; wholehearted; devoted; earnestKing Gnu

This is King Gnu’s fourth single, released on December 29, 2021.

It was also chosen as the theme song for the animated film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which premiered in theaters on December 24, 2021.

I think the rapid-fire, almost rapped vocal delivery makes it a very cool, up-tempo rock track.

While the arrangement is highly aggressive, the vocals layered over the backing track never become overly provocative—that contrast is part of King Gnu’s appeal.

If you want to sing this well at karaoke, the number one priority is not falling behind the song’s tempo and rhythm.

In that sense, it might be better to memorize the lyrics before you sing.

Also, in the higher sections, try to place your falsetto firmly against the inside of your upper palate to produce a tone rich in higher overtones.

An electrifying shock of a track inspired by the monolith that triggered apes’ evolution into intelligent life, seamlessly fusing Crossfaith’s weighty message with electronica.

It portrays the protagonist’s inner turmoil—lost in life and struggling through deep despair—through powerful shouts and a destructive sound.

Released in June 2012 as the opener of the mini-album “ZION EP,” it’s known as a work that symbolizes the band’s musical evolution.

Their legendary 2014 performance on the main stage of the UK’s Download Festival, which drove roughly 20,000 fans into a frenzy, is still talked about today.

A gem that resonates with every soul yearning to break out of its shell while confronting inner conflict.

Yabai T-Shirts Yasan is a uniquely styled three-piece rock band that’s gained a lot of popularity.

Just when you think they’re singing a cute idol-style song, it suddenly shifts into a death metal vibe, complete with outrageous death growls—many of their tracks leave a strong impression.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is Blooming the Tank-top.

The chorus and A-melody have a cute, idol-like feel, but the B-melody and other sections feature plenty of parts where you can scream with death vocals.

It’s a perfect track for blowing off stress!
