For seniors: Year-round ideas for wall decorations
Wall decorations that brighten up the walls of senior care facilities.
Many facilities likely include them as part of craft-based recreation.
While seasonal wall art that lets residents feel the time of year is lovely even when spending time indoors, pieces that seniors can make at their own pace—and that can be used year-round regardless of season—have their own special appeal.
So this time, we’re sharing ideas for “wall decorations you can use all year round.”
Craft recreation helps stimulate the brain by using the fingers, and it also sparks conversation with other residents, promoting communication.

Brush lettering art

Characters written with a brush have a distinctive sense of dynamism, and differences in layout and stroke style reveal individuality.
This piece is about freely writing text in brush script and using it as decoration.
Simply writing directly with a brush is fine, but if you keep design in mind and play with stroke thickness and placement, the letters can give an almost pictorial impression.
Adding accents—such as mixing red elements into the black—further enhances the sense of brilliance, so that approach is also recommended.
Jizo Bodhisattva pastel art

Many older people have probably seen rows of Jizo statues along the roadside at least once.
Let’s try turning a scene with Jizo statues into a wall decoration.
With pastel art, you can feel the gentle atmosphere of the Jizo even more.
We’ll powder the pastel medium and create the picture.
Pastel drawings are colored, but you can erase them with an eraser.
You can also use techniques like creating light and dark contrasts, blurring, and gradients.
Once older adults become comfortable with pastel art, it might be nice to have them try various techniques.
Jizo statues suit seasonal landscapes throughout the year.
Please use these pastel art ideas as inspiration.
Rose wall hanging

We’d like to introduce an original rose wall decoration made by rolling paper.
Prepare colored paper for the flowers and leaves.
For the flower, take a strip of colored paper cut thinly: randomly pleat (accordion-fold) two-thirds of the strip, leaving the remaining one-third unpleated.
Starting from the unpleated end, roll the paper; when you finish rolling, glue the end to secure it, and the flower is complete.
For the leaves, similarly roll thin strips of colored paper from one end, glue to secure, then pinch and shape them with your fingers.
For the stem, cut a long, narrow strip and lightly roll it to add a gentle curve.
Arrange and glue the flowers, stems, and leaves onto your choice of backing or base, balancing the layout, and you’re done in no time! Since there are no difficult steps, this craft can also be used as finger dexterity training in senior care facilities.

Crane and turtle amulet-style ornament

Cranes and turtles are classic decorations imbued with wishes for longevity, and they really convey a distinctly Japanese atmosphere.
How about experiencing the wishes and splendor embedded in such crane and turtle designs through a charm-like ornament? Firmly fold the base paper to create a three-dimensional amulet, then add crane and turtle motifs along with fine embellishments.
Since the crane and turtle serve as the elements that convey your wishes, make them prominently large in the design, and use the surrounding decorations to help them stand out—that’s the key point.
Simple paper flower

Even when the weather is bad, having lots of colorful flowers decorating the wall can lift your spirits a bit, right? Here’s an easy way to make cute flowers that you can display on the wall or hang from the ceiling.
Fold three strips of construction paper of different lengths softly in half and staple them.
Make lots of these and attach them with double-sided tape.
Try making flowers in various colors, or change the color of each petal.
You can also adjust the number of petals to change the size of the flower to your liking.
Origami rainbow hot air balloon

How about making a large rainbow-colored hot air balloon wall decoration using a classic craft: paper chain garlands made from origami? Create the chains in seven colors and paste them onto a sheet of colored construction paper cut into a balloon shape.
A big balloon will catch the eye, and the seven-color rainbow will make for a cheerful wall display.
In addition to the balloon, you can add softly floating clouds and cute little birds, or even place a doll riding in the balloon.
Making lots of small balloons would also create an impressive wall decoration.
small bird

Round-faced, plump little bird wall decorations are a cute idea you can use in any season.
Use colored construction paper in your favorite colors to make a round face, body, wings, and tail, and use yellow paper for the beak.
By changing the direction of the face and the position of the wings, you can show different ways of flying, so try assembling the pieces before gluing.
Once you’re happy with the placement, glue them down and draw the face—the little bird is complete.
Make them in various colors for a bright, eye-catching wall display.
They work great as the main decoration, and you can also make them smaller to mix and match with other ornaments.
