For seniors: Year-round ideas for wall decorations
Wall decorations that brighten up the walls of senior care facilities.
Many facilities likely include them as part of craft-based recreation.
While seasonal wall art that lets residents feel the time of year is lovely even when spending time indoors, pieces that seniors can make at their own pace—and that can be used year-round regardless of season—have their own special appeal.
So this time, we’re sharing ideas for “wall decorations you can use all year round.”
Craft recreation helps stimulate the brain by using the fingers, and it also sparks conversation with other residents, promoting communication.

Three-dimensional chrysanthemum flower

Chrysanthemums, whose flower language includes “nobility,” are considered auspicious flowers symbolizing longevity and said to bring good fortune.
Let’s decorate your Respect-for-the-Aged Day gathering with chrysanthemum ornaments! First, cut origami paper into thin strips about 1 cm wide.
Fold each strip in half and round off the ends.
Once done, apply glue to the center and arrange the pieces radially to form a flower shape, layering them as you go.
Next, use a pencil or other thin stick to curl the tips.
Make another one the same way, then stack and glue them together to finish.
Create chrysanthemums in various colors to brighten up the room!
Daruma doll, rising-sun fan, and adonis flowers (fukujusō)

How about a wall decoration packed with lucky symbols: a daruma for prosperous business, a fan that spreads good fortune, and Adonis flowers (Fukujusō) whose floral language signifies happiness? First, make the daruma by combining two sheets of accordion-folded paper to form the body, then layer a single sheet of accordion-folded white paper for the face.
Add the eyes, mustache, and the pattern on the belly to finish.
Make the Japanese-flag fan the same way, using accordion folds.
For the Adonis flowers, cut yellow paper into flower shapes and combine it with finely slitted yellow and green paper.
Once you’ve made plenty of each part, arrange them thoughtfully and decorate the wall!
Crane diamond ornament

Here’s an idea for making a “Crane Diamond Ornament” using five sheets of origami in different colors.
It may look difficult, but the folding steps are simple, so please give it a try.
Fold the origami into a triangle and unfold it, then fold the adjacent edges along the crease.
Turn the paper over, fold a crane using the white area at the remaining corner, and create the connecting section using the yellow area.
The crane only includes the head and wings, so it’s easier than it looks; just fold the head slowly to make a clean shape.
Fold all five pieces in the same way and connect them to complete the ornament!
tassel garland

Decorate your walls or windowsills to instantly brighten up the room! Here are some tassel garland ideas.
If you want to lift the mood of your space or need decorations for an event, why not try making a garland? You’ll need scissors or a utility knife, tissue paper, a ruler, a hot glue gun or tape, and string.
The video uses large sheets of thin paper, but regular tissue paper should work as a substitute.
The key is to cut the paper and then twist it together as you assemble it.
Give it a try!
Stained glass-style CD case

Unneeded CD cases transform into stained glass! Hold a drawing on paper against the outside of the case and trace it from the inside with a black permanent marker.
Once you’ve finished tracing, color it in with your favorite shades of permanent markers.
Next, crumple a sheet of aluminum foil to create wrinkles, fit it inside the case, close the lid, and trim off any excess.
You’ll have a stained-glass-style decoration.
The aluminum foil reflects light just right, creating a brighter, more cheerful atmosphere indoors!
Squirrel cheer
Let us introduce a wall decoration of squirrel cheerleaders that practically makes you hear them shouting “Do your best!” These cheerleaders and cheer girls form a team to cheer with pom-poms—but turning them into squirrels makes them twice as cute.
Instead of pom-poms, have them hold flowers made from tissue paper.
Please make lots of squirrels out of construction paper and decorate with them.
Many older adults will likely feel their hearts lifted by this adorable cheering squad.
If you create and add seasonal flowers and plants alongside the squirrel cheerleaders, it will also help older adults feel the seasons.
Flag garland made with paper plates

At sports days held in schoolyards or athletic fields, you may sometimes see strings of flags from various countries hung up as decorations.
These are called international flags, and they add a festive atmosphere that’s perfect for a sports day.
They’re great for seniors’ sports days as well.
Since seniors’ sports events are often held indoors, garlands are especially recommended.
Draw designs of different national flags on paper plates, connect them with string, and turn them into a garland.
Because you’ll make many flags, participants can encounter countries they didn’t know about or see unusual designs.
Creating the flags can also spark lively conversation.
