Flower picking, which you can enjoy both by looking at and by smelling the fragrance, seems to offer a relaxing effect and the fun of thinking about where to display the flowers you’ve picked.

The act of using your fingertips to pick flowers can bring a sense of accomplishment and transform your living space into a more colorful place.

You can also dry the flowers to make scented sachets, float them in a bowl of water to enjoy their beauty, or do a hand bath to relax—highly recommended.

Be sure to have fun with flowers you’ve picked yourself.

Seedling plantingNEW!

Planting seedlings that evoke the seasons and are easy for older adults to join can be something to look forward to as you enjoy watching them grow.

Choosing seasonal flowers or seedlings that are easy to harvest can heighten anticipation for what comes next.

Prepare in advance by filling planters with soil, and set up chairs and tables to reduce physical strain and create an environment where older adults can relax and have fun.

The growth of the seedlings, watering rotations, and other aspects of the activity may spark new communication and broaden the enjoyment.

Goya (bitter melon) is easy to grow even for beginners and thrives both in the ground and in planters.

So why not grow goya with older adults and enjoy the harvest together? Depending on the variety, you can harvest them once they reach 15–20 cm or more.

If harvested when too small, goya can taste quite bitter; on the other hand, if allowed to ripen and turn yellow, the bitterness decreases but the texture worsens.

Try to pick green goya that have grown to a moderate size.

Enjoy your harvest in dishes like goya champuru and savor the delicious flavor.

PET bottle radishNEW!

When you think of daikon radishes, you probably picture growing them in a field, but you can actually grow them in plastic bottles too.

Prepare a large plastic bottle, like a 2-liter one, and cut off the mouth.

Then fill it with soil and sow the seeds.

After that, just water it—done! It’s a fun cultivation method that takes advantage of the bottle’s long shape.

Plus, you can grow it indoors, and since the bottle is transparent, you can clearly observe its daily growth.

How about comparing how they grow and enjoying some conversation together?

Growing sweet potatoes in sandbagsNEW!

Growing sweet potatoes in sandbagsNEW!

For growing sweet potatoes, you’ll need three things: sandbags, seedlings, and soil.

First, spread out the sandbag and fill it with soil to about 80%.

Then plant the seedlings, but be aware that the planting method affects the size and number of sweet potatoes.

Planting them vertically will yield larger sweet potatoes, while planting them horizontally will produce smaller ones but in greater numbers.

Just leave them on the balcony as they are and that’s fine! It varies by quality, but you can generally harvest in about 130 days.

You won’t even need a planter, so it seems easy enough for beginners to grow.

Let’s enjoy home gardening with planters.

Home gardening provides opportunities for older adults to move their bodies and stimulate their brains, and it’s said to help prevent dementia.

Enjoy some fresh air while watering, and observe the day-to-day growth.

Sharing the harvested vegetables with everyone is also recommended.

Cooking and eating them is delicious, of course, but why not savor the vegetables’ natural flavors as they are? It might bring back childhood memories and spark nostalgic conversations.

Cherry tomatoes, eggplants, and bitter melons (goya) are easy to grow and highly recommended.

The beauty of flowers soothes the hearts of older adults, and taking care of them—like regular watering—is essential.

Through container gardening, it may also boost daily motivation.

Ask in advance about favorite flowers and colors, and plan a container arrangement accordingly.

It’s also a great idea to prepare cute planter picks, not just the flowers.
