The bronze statue in front of Kintetsu Nara Station depicts Gyōki. Gyōki was a Buddhist monk active from the late 7th to the early 8th century, during the Nara period. He entered the priesthood at the age of fifteen and studied Buddhism. While the mainstream practice at the time was for monks to remain secluded in temples for training, Gyōki traveled throughout the country to preach Buddhism directly to the people. He is also well known for having been personally commissioned by Emperor Shōmu and appointed in 743 as the official in charge of constructing the Great Buddha.
