Otter is written as 川獺 in kanji. The character 獺 is a kanji meaning “otter,” and it originates from the belief in China that, because otters line up the fish they catch, they were offering them to their ancestors. Other examples are 河馬 for hippopotamus and 海豚 for dolphin.
