In this article, we’ll introduce performances and acts that staff can put on, as well as activities and entertainment you can enjoy together with older adults.

That can be fun, too.

We hope you find this helpful!

[For Seniors] Entertainment and Performances That Delight at Day Service Centers (31–40)

Matsuken Samba

When it comes to songs popular with seniors, you can’t leave this one out! It’s “Matsuken Samba” by Ken Matsudaira! It’s a fun song just to dance to, but if you ever feel like, “It’s so standard that I might be bored of it,” it could be a good idea to add some twists during the dance.

You could incorporate comedy bits you often see on TV, add party tricks, or even try doing an impression of Ken Matsudaira’s voice! If singing and dancing alone don’t feel like quite enough, definitely give these ideas a try.

Magic

[Great Escape Magic] Easy magic anyone can do with cardboard! Seniors burst out laughing! Perfect for festivals, Christmas, and Respect-for-the-Aged Day events
Magic

This is an escape-from-a-box magic trick, well known from circuses and the like.

A large-scale trick like this is sure to get everyone excited.

Prepare a cardboard box big enough for a person to fit inside, have someone get into the box, and then insert many rods into it.

It gets even more thrilling if the person inside reacts with a shout when the rods go in, and if participants from the audience help insert some of the rods themselves.

Karaoke contests are a popular attraction even at care facilities such as day services.

Singing loudly, following the lyrics, and keeping the rhythm are all very good for health and help stimulate the brain, so they’re highly recommended.

It’ll also be exciting if you assign scores and decide a winner.

one-shot gag

one-shot gag

As a way to liven up the Respect-for-the-Aged gathering, how about some inventive one-shot performances? Simple acts that are easy to understand and wrap up quickly are sure to be enjoyed not only by the elderly but also by the staff.

These days, you can find all sorts of items at 100-yen shops, so preparation can be easy and inexpensive, which is a nice bonus.

And if you come up with something high-quality, it can shine not just at the Respect-for-the-Aged event but also at year-end and New Year parties and other events—so why not give it a try?

Festival Mambo

Festival Mambo

Festivals really make your heart dance, don’t they? That heart-thrilling feeling is captured in the song “Omatsuri Mambo.” It’s the ultimate collaboration between festivals and Latin music.

And since it’s a song by the eternally popular Hibari Misora, there’s no way it won’t get the crowd excited.

Add some choreography and have everyone join in for part of it, and the whole venue will be wrapped in a cheerful mood.

Soran Bushi

BOH Care Service Center 17th Summer Evening Festival – Staff Performance (Soran Bushi)
Soran Bushi

Here’s an idea featuring the classic Soran Bushi to liven up your summer festival.

With shamisen and drums resounding and staff performing powerful, synchronized moves, the whole venue instantly comes to life.

The spirited calls and rhythmic motions are infectious, creating an atmosphere that makes even older adults want to move along.

Traditional happi coats and tenugui heighten the festival vibe, lifting spirits just by watching.

While evoking the local tradition, it creates a bright, bustling mood—an indispensable, crowd-pleasing attraction for any summer festival.

Sazae-san dance

This performance features wearing a Sazae-san mask and apron and presenting a comical dance.

The music used is “Sazae-san Ikka,” well known as the anime’s ending theme.

Its gentle rhythm makes the humorous movements stand out even more.

Not only are there motions inspired by the lyrics, but also bold moves that wouldn’t normally fit the world of Sazae-san—this variety of choreography is another point that captivates viewers.

While keeping the unique atmosphere in mind, including call-and-response among multiple Sazae-sans, let’s dance with joy.

manzai (a traditional Japanese stand-up comedy duo performance)

Manzai is one of the performing arts that everyone loves, isn’t it? Laughing from the bottom of your belly is good for your health and lifts your spirits.

If you have someone with a knack for writing, have them write the material; and if you don’t think you can come up with something funny, I think it’s fine to adapt routines from popular manzai duos!

Enjoy it even while seated! Here are ideas for a sing-and-exercise routine to the song “Matsuri.” When you think of summer festivals or evening cool-down festivals, many people imagine Bon Odori, right? This time, let’s move our bodies to the famous song “Matsuri” by the legendary Saburo Kitajima.

Rock-paper-scissors tournament

One event that captivates people’s hearts despite not being particularly special or interesting is the rock-paper-scissors tournament.

One of its appeals is that it concludes in a relatively short time and participants can win prizes.

The most seamless and recommended format is to have a representative on stage play rock-paper-scissors against the participants.
