[For Seniors] Entertainment and Performances That Delight at Day Service Centers (41–50)
Ogiri (Japanese improv-style comedy wordplay game)

Originally devised as entertainment for rakugo vaudeville theaters, “oogiri” takes its name from the final scene in kabuki, called “taishime.” The characters for “kiri” here are a phonetic borrowing implying that both the audience is delighted and the performers gain benefit.
It’s well known from the TV show Shōten.
Wearing a kimono when you appear—no matter what the act is—helps create the right atmosphere.
kusudama (decorative paper ball used for celebrations)

How about using a festive kusudama to really liven up a celebratory event and highlight the joy? The classic contents are a banner with a message and confetti, but the fact that you don’t know what’s inside until you open it heightens the sense of anticipation.
Pulling the string with a countdown and having the message burst onto the scene is exciting even when you already know the result.
It’s important to think about how the message will be written and what kind of decorations will flutter out, so you can create a kusudama that makes the moment even more fun.
Tankō-bushi (Coal Miner’s Song)

Tanko-bushi is a folk song from Fukuoka Prefecture, best known for being used in Bon Odori.
Let’s showcase a comical dance set to its light, buoyant rhythm.
Since the song strongly evokes Bon Odori, we’ll center the choreography around that style and gradually add variations, including comedic movements.
The lyrics that depict the moon floating in the night sky are also memorable, so dancing in moon-themed costumes inspired by that image is highly recommended.
Your creativity will be tested in how much humor you can weave into this gently paced piece.
Lucky Daruma Dance

When it comes to daruma dolls, they’re strongly associated with good luck, and just having one there makes it feel like a celebration.
How about wearing a costume inspired by a daruma and expressing celebration and joy through dance? A big daruma costume can be hard to move in, so you can make people laugh by showing how you do your best to dance in it.
Since a daruma that’s hard to move in can lead to a simple, limited dance, we recommend appearing as a set with a more mobile costume as well.
Ahe-aho Soran

When you hear “Soran Bushi,” you probably think of school sports days, but this time we’re introducing “Ahe-Aho Soran.” It was created by Masahiro Shimono, who runs the nationwide “Ahe-Aho Classroom.” Set the lyrics of “Ahe-Aho Soran” to the familiar melody of “Soran Bushi” and enjoy moving your body.
Older adults are welcome to join in, or they can enjoy watching the staff dance, or even just take part by singing.
It has a festive feel, so it’s perfect as entertainment!
Fox Dance

The Fox Dance, which became a huge boom in 2022 as part of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters’ performances.
Danced to “The Fox,” it also significantly boosted the popularity of the team’s fox mascot.
How about trying the Fox Dance as an activity? Staff can wear fox ears and tails and dance like the Fighters Girls, or everyone participating can enjoy the dance together.
There are also dance videos you can enjoy while seated, so be sure to use those as a reference.
Impersonation show

Impersonating celebrities, comedians, or singers can be a big hit if you do it well, so it’s highly recommended.
Try to choose impressions that are easy to recognize at a glance.
There are also videos online that teach you how to do impressions, so check those out for reference.
chorus

Isn’t a chorus, where participants unite their hearts to create a beautiful harmony, a staple at events? If everyone wears matching costumes, it can heighten the mood and help present a stronger sense of unity as a group.
Song selection is also important—whether it’s the grand, nostalgic atmosphere of folk songs or the fun vibe of popular hits, choosing pieces that fit the occasion sounds enjoyable.
The key to a polished performance lies not in individual vocal ability, but in everyone working together, so you can also aim to deepen bonds through the program.

Pink Lady was a duo that sparked an explosive boom in the late 1970s, and even people who didn’t live through that era probably know many of their songs.
How about performing a dance to one of their signature tracks, “UFO”? Both the song and the choreography are comical, so simply dancing it earnestly will create a fun atmosphere.
If there are people who know the song or the moves, having them join in with just the hand motions can get everyone involved and make the space even more enjoyable—highly recommended.
kayo show (Japanese pop music show)

When it comes to classics that add flair to a summer festival, nothing beats a “kayō show.” Staff dress up in kimonos or gowns and perform nostalgic pop songs, prompting handclaps and humming from the crowd.
Some people’s eyes light up the moment a Showa-era hit starts playing.
There’s room for laughs with small dance moves, staging, and props, and it works whether you aim for a mellow, heartfelt mood or a lively, festive one.
Even if you’re not a strong singer, wholehearted role-playing draws applause.
It’s a performance that creates a warm moment where nostalgia and smiles overflow together.
