[For Seniors] Let's Enjoy Exercising with a Towel!
Many nursing and care facilities incorporate simple exercises into their daily routine as a form of recreation.
Why not try adding the “towel exercises for seniors” we’re introducing this time?
With towel exercises, you can train the whole body—from the upper to the lower body—while remaining seated.
We’ve gathered exercises that are gentle and manageable for older adults.
It’s also easy to prepare since you can use towels already available at the facility.
By calling out rhythms or singing while exercising, the five senses are stimulated, which also supports brain training.
Please consider using “towel exercises” as a workout option for older adults!

[For Seniors] Let's Enjoy Exercising with a Towel! (1–10)
Leg-strengthening exercises

Let’s use a towel to stretch and work your legs.
Place a towel on your thigh to add resistance, and raise and lower your thigh.
You can also thread the towel under your knee and simply bend and extend the lower leg to effectively move the area above the knee.
Other exercises include squeezing a towel firmly between both knees, or looping a towel around both legs to create resistance and moving each leg outward.
If you pass the towel under the soles of your feet, you can also train your calves—give these a try!
Exercises to strengthen the back and shoulder blades

Move your back and shoulder blades to achieve a youthful posture! Raise a towel over your head and move it up and down behind your back, or move it up and down around your waist to stretch your back thoroughly.
You can also work the area around your shoulder blades by bringing the towel behind your neck and slowly opening and closing your arms like bird wings.
When moving the towel up and down, apply firm pressure, and when moving it around your neck, focus on fully stretching the area around your shoulder blades.
Give it a try!
Arm and core exercises

For older adults, strengthening the core is very important for walking with confidence and for maintaining internal organ health.
In addition to moving your arms by holding a towel with both hands and stretching it up and down and forward and back, let’s also train the core.
For example, hold the towel above your head and lean your body to the left and right; keep your arms extended forward while holding the towel and twist your waist side to side; or make a rowing motion like paddling a boat.
Simply holding a towel and extending your arms is exercise, but if you add a movement that requires a bit of balance, you’ll build a healthier body.
[For Seniors] Let’s Have Fun Exercising with a Towel! (11–20)
Exercises to strengthen the lower body using a towel

Introducing towel exercises that effectively strengthen the lower body, including the hips and knees! You can keep your legs moving well just around the knees by placing a towel between your knees and bending and straightening your legs, or by threading a towel under your shins and lifting.
If you want to mobilize your hip joints, hook a looped towel around your foot and rotate it, or try tossing it like a ring toward a target.
Even simply preparing a cleaning cloth and wiping the floor with your feet counts as exercise, so give these a try whenever you have a spare moment.
Around the world with a towel! Full-body exercises

Let’s do towel exercises while feeling like we’re having fun on a world trip! First, tie a single knot at one end of the towel.
When “shoulder” is called, bring the knot to your shoulder; when “foot” is called, try your best to kick it up with your foot—this is how we’ll do the exercise.
Start with the shoulder and foot cues to get used to the movements.
Once you’re comfortable, to turn it into a world-travel version, assign country or continent names to each shoulder and each foot, and move the towel knot to the designated place when it’s called.
For example, if you make your right shoulder “the UK,” then when “UK” is called, you bring the towel knot to your right shoulder.
This way, you can train your brain at the same time!
Brain-training exercises with a towel and a ball

Let’s try a towel exercise that also trains your brain using a towel and a ball! Two people hold one towel together, place a ball on it, and then pass it along in a relay to the next pair holding a towel.
Start by passing gently and slowly, then increase the difficulty partway through by giving the ball a slight bounce as you pass it.
You can also change the difficulty by using different ball sizes, so give that a try.
Because you’ll interact with various people—your towel partner, the pair you pass the ball to, and others—it’s a great way to communicate and help reduce feelings of loneliness.
Enjoyable upper body training

To strengthen your upper body, try a towel exercise that gets your fingers, hands, and arms moving well.
Moving your hands and fingers thoroughly is essential for performing everyday actions smoothly.
If you want to focus on moving from the fingers to the hand, hold the towel using only your thumb and index finger and repeatedly tighten and loosen it to keep it taut, or hold it in a similar way and rotate the towel all the way around in a circle.
If you want to move from the hand to the arm, simply spinning the towel briskly is fine.
Also, if you bend your waist slightly while holding the towel and make a motion as if handing it to the person in front of you, you can engage your waist area as well.
