When you think of stylish music, many people might recall the Shibuya-kei sound that was popular in the 1990s.

With that in mind, I chose Hideki Kaji’s “Amai Koibito,” an artist who could be considered emblematic of Shibuya-kei.

Its chic, café- and city-evoking vibe and poppy groove may well epitomize the music scene of the 1990s.

DOGLANDPEOPLE 1

PEOPLE 1 “DOGLAND” (Official Video)
DOGLANDPEOPLE 1

Released in December 2022, this track mixes a slightly eerie atmosphere with poetic lyrics.

It drew attention as the ending theme for episode 10 of the anime Chainsaw Man, arriving at a milestone moment as PEOPLE 1’s first anime theme song.

The structure is striking: rap-like verses give way to a chorus where the band ensemble brings a catchy lift, and the lyrics—linking physicality with inner emotion—hit straight to the heart.

Later included on the album “Hoshimeguri, Kimi ni Kinsei,” the song shines with lyrics and composition by Deu and arrangement by Hajime Taguchi.

Its cool world, balancing ambiguity and intensity, is perfect for listeners seeking refined music in everyday life or those moved by the synchronicity of animation and music.

Vaundy, who draws attention for his genre-defying musicianship and unique sensibility.

The song released digitally in April 2020 was his first tie-in work, written as the opening theme for TV Tokyo’s Drama 25 series “Throw It Away, Adachi-san.” Warm, country-tinged guitar tones pair with lyrics that trace the days of the week as time moves along, carrying a gentle message that affirms the self while singing of a break from the past.

Later included on the album “strobo” and certified Streaming Gold, this track softly nudges you forward when you want to mark an ending or take a new first step.

369 (feat. Awich)OZworld

A soul-stirring, hard-hitting collaboration is here.

Okinawa-born rapper OZworld joins forces with fellow Okinawan-rooted Awich for a project unveiled in June 2025, opening the curtain on the EP “369 no.3.” The floating, psychedelic trap sound—like wandering into another dimension—is irresistibly immersive.

OZworld’s introspective lyrics intertwine with Awich’s razor-sharp flow, shaking the listener to the core.

This track fuses spiritual exploration with musical adventure, and it just might strike directly at the senses of anyone craving something new and stimulating.

Burning Friday NightLucky Kilimanjaro

A song that paints a nighttime scene of sharing whisky and loneliness has been released by Lucky Kilimanjaro.

It features an upbeat rhythm inspired by 80s city pop and disco, with glossy, synth-driven textures that leave a strong impression.

The lyrics carefully depict the Friday-night mix of exhilaration and solitude, along with the longing for human connection.

Included on their first mini-album, FULLCOLOR, released in July 2015, the track resurfaced on social media in 2023, garnering renewed attention and surpassing 10 million streams as a revival hit.

It’s perfect as background music for settings with a mature vibe, like nighttime drives or bars.

For those carrying loneliness yet striving to look ahead, it’s sure to be a song that stays close to the heart.

Mori Calliope’s “Sepia” is a collaboration track with TOOBOE, released in April 2025.

The two artists’ vocal work blends beautifully, and the animated music video, created by Mori Calliope herself, is another highlight.

The lyrics depict protagonists living in the moment, fleetingly, continuing on despite carrying backward-looking feelings.
