[Childcare] Fun to Make! February Craft Ideas Collection
February is full of unique delights—like Setsubun, Valentine’s Day, and activities that make the most of the cold, such as ice-making—that children look forward to.
However, when it snows or the temperature drops too low, there will be more days when you can’t go outside.
So this time, we’re sharing craft ideas perfect for February.
We’ve gathered lots of fun projects that will excite children and blow away the winter chill.
Be sure to try making them together with your kids.
Note: Since items made by children are treated as artworks, we refer to them as “creations” in the text.

Snowman Fashion Show

Here’s a craft idea where kids can freely create snowmen using circle, triangle, and square pieces.
First, stick a large round piece onto a backing sheet to make the base of the snowman.
Then glue on a scarf made by wrapping yarn around a piece of thick paper cut into a rectangle, and you’re all set! From here, let the kids freely express their snowmen using the circle, triangle, and square pieces.
Some children might use circular pieces for the eyes, while others might use triangular pieces.
It’ll be fun to see how their unique sensibilities come through in their creations!
Making oni masks

Let’s make oni masks to wear for Setsubun! As a first step, cut the base shapes for the oni’s face and hair from construction paper.
Next, cut out the parts for the eyes, nose, fangs, cheeks, and horns, and pre-cut short pieces of yarn for the hair.
Adults can handle the prep, but it might be nice to let the children do it since it’s good practice with scissors.
Once everything is ready, glue each part onto the face base.
After the oni’s face is complete, attach it to the mask base to finish! The mask base should be prepared by an adult in advance.
Oni’s hat

Let’s make a demon (oni) headpiece that even little babies can enjoy.
Prepare your favorite yarn and wrap it around a postcard about 50–60 times.
Remove the bundle of yarn from the postcard and tie it at the center with a leftover piece of yarn.
Fluff the yarn to add volume and spread it out into a circle to create the demon’s hair.
Next, draw a circle on yellow construction paper with a felt-tip pen and cut it in half to make a semicircle.
Roll the cut paper into a three-dimensional cone to form the demon’s horn.
Finally, thread elastic through a piece of cut cardstock, then use a hot glue gun to attach the yarn hair and the horn to it.
You’re all done! Give it a try.
Oni bean-throwing bag

Let’s make an oni-themed Setsubun bag that’s perfect for festivities.
Cut out the oni outline drawn on construction paper with scissors, then cut out the hair and facial parts as well.
After making the oni’s horn(s), eyes, and mouth, glue them onto the face to complete the oni.
Next, cut construction paper to create the gusset (side) pieces of the bag, snip small notches at the ends, and attach them to the oni face.
Carefully glue the front and back of the face together, then cut a ribbon to an easy-to-hold length and attach it to the bag to finish.
Make a cute oni bean-holding bag and enjoy Setsubun!

If you’re looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day decoration, why not make a heart wreath? It’s a cute idea you can create with just a paper plate, tissue paper, and ribbon! First, fold the paper plate in half and cut it into a heart shape with scissors.
Cut out the inside in a heart shape as well to make a heart-shaped frame.
Next, glue crumpled white and pink tissue paper onto the frame.
It’s recommended to alternate the colors as you stick them on.
Finally, attach ribbons at the top of the frame—one for decoration and one for hanging—and you’re done.
For children who find tying bows difficult, prepare pre-tied ribbons in advance.
