Craft ideas using felt: perfect for kids’ summer vacation projects! (11–20)
Puppet made with felt

Enjoy design! Here are some ideas for making puppets out of felt.
When you want to make a puppet, you might find yourself wondering what motif to choose.
These original puppet ideas are perfect for you! First, try sketching the puppet’s design as an illustration.
Incorporating features that resemble yourself, your family, or your friends, or paying special attention to the hairstyle, can help express originality.
One great point about using felt is that it makes thread finishing easy.
Fruit Concentration
These are felt cards you can use to play Concentration (Memory)! You can choose any motifs you like—fruits, vehicles, animals, anything is fine.
However, since Concentration is a game where you match pairs of identical cards, be sure to make two cards of each design.
Cut felt into card shapes and either glue or sew the motifs onto them.
If you’re making everything out of felt, it’s efficient to layer the same fabric and cut two identical pieces at once to save time.
If you want to keep things simple, you could also use store-bought appliqués and just stick them on.
train
Let me share an idea for a train made with a coin case.
When it comes to toy trains, “Plarail” is the classic, but this time let’s make one with felt! Cut out a train base the same size as the coin case, along with parts like windows and lights, all from felt.
Once you sew them together, slip it over a coin case wrapped with magnetic tape.
Then just sew it closed, and you’re done! This toy can be connected with magnets, so try making trains in different colors and types.
It might be fun to make a playmat with tracks to go with it, too!
cake

Here’s an idea for felt cakes you can use for pretend play.
Basically, make patterns for the cake shapes you want, cut the felt to match, and sew the pieces together.
If you make several slice-shaped shortcakes that come together to form a whole cake, it might be easier to play with.
For the cake base, place a piece of thick paperboard on the bottom, stuff it with cotton, and sew it closed.
For the cream, cut felt into a pinwheel shape and stitch it while pulling the tips together tightly so it looks realistic.
Then make your favorite toppings, like the cream layers in the cross-section or strawberries!
Perfect for button practice! Onigiri

Here’s an idea for a felt rice ball (onigiri) that lets you practice buttoning! First, cut a rectangle from white felt and fold it.
While keeping the center of the folded edge intact, cut it into an onigiri shape.
Make fillings like pickled plum or salmon and sew snap buttons onto them.
Sew matching snaps to the center inside of the onigiri as well.
Sew a two-hole button to the upper inside part of the onigiri, and cut a slit on the opposite side.
Finally, glue on a piece of “nori” cut from black felt to the outside—and you’re done! Attach your favorite filling, button the onigiri closed, and enjoy making your felt rice balls.
donut

Why not try making donuts out of felt? If you cut felt into circles and add colorful toppings, you’ll have adorable donuts that look just like the real thing.
It’s also a great summer vacation craft to make with your kids.
You can freely change the colors and shapes, so it’s a fun project that sparks creativity.
The finished donuts look lovely as room decorations and can also be used as pretend-play toys.
Felt is an easy-to-find material you can get at 100-yen shops.
If you use ideas that don’t require needles or a glue gun, even small children can enjoy it safely.
Be sure to give it a try!

bag

One of the great things about felt is that you can use it as-is after cutting without finishing the edges.
Why not take advantage of that and make a bag? All you need is a large sheet of felt from a 100-yen shop and a pair of scissors.
First, make a template—no pattern paper required—just draw straight lines with a ruler.
Cut out the handle section and braid it, and for the bag’s sides, simply tie together the slits you’ve made.
Once you’ve securely tied the handle, it’s done.
It holds more than it looks, too!
