Next Levelaespa

Next Levelaespa

aespa is a global group formed in 2020.

It’s pronounced “espa.” In an era dominated by large-member groups, they debuted from SM Entertainment as a select four with the single “Black Mamba.” The members are Karina, the leader and main dancer; Giselle, SM’s first Japanese female member and the main rapper; Winter, the visual; and Ningning, who is from China.

With the concept of “meeting an avatar that is another version of oneself and experiencing a new world,” aespa builds a unique, unprecedented universe centered on avatars.

Their second single “Forever” and the long-running hit “Next Level,” both remakes, are also distinctive.

Rather than standard hit songs, the group is characterized by an experimental image and an aggressive style unconstrained by conventional concepts.

시간을 달려서(Rough)GFRIEND

GFRIEND was formed in 2015.

They’re affectionately known as “Yochin,” short for “Yeoja Chingu,” which means “girlfriend.” Although they were from a small agency called SOURCE MUSIC, they broke out thanks to a video of their performance of “Me Gustas Tu,” where they kept dancing powerfully on an outdoor stage in heavy rain despite slipping multiple times.

In 2016, they soared to top-idol status, winning a total of 29 trophies in a single year with masterpieces like “Rough” and the lead track “NAVILLERA” from their first full album.

With a string of hits produced by the duo Iggy Youngbae, they sparked a Yochin whirlwind—at the time standing shoulder to shoulder with TWICE, or arguably even breaking big first.

Their appeal lies in their earnest attitude that fuels overwhelming performances, along with their grace and approachability.

From 2018 into 2019 and beyond, they shifted to a sexier, cooler style with songs like “Fever” and “MAGO,” revealing a new side of their charm, but on May 22, 2021, their activities abruptly ended following the expiration of their exclusive contracts with the agency.

The suddenness left many fans, myself included, in shock.

While it’s truly unfortunate that their group activities ended, GFRIEND’s songs will continue to shine now and always, and I wish the members even greater success in the future.

STEPKARA

Alongside Girls’ Generation, KARA were key contributors to the K-pop boom in Japan, becoming a nationally beloved group with exceptional name recognition.

They debuted in 2007 with four members—Gyuri, Seungyeon, Sunghee, and Nicole.

In 2008, following the departure of main vocalist Sunghee, Hara and Jiyoung joined, forming the five-member lineup that would be active for many years.

In Japan, their friendly personalities shone through on variety shows, winning over households across the country and making them a group loved by people of all ages.

True to their name, which in Greek means “sweet melody,” they have a charm that can completely captivate anyone who listens or watches.

From the cute appeal of songs like Mister—whose hip-sway dance became a hot topic in Japan—and Honey, to the explosively cool, chic style of Lupin, they were all-rounders who could turn any concept into something dazzling.

The title track STEP from their third full-length album, released in 2011, is a masterpiece that encapsulates KARA’s ongoing allure; it even achieved the remarkable feat of topping Oricon’s Western music album category in Japan.

After Nicole and Jiyoung left in 2014, the group continued as four with Youngji joining, delivering energetic, catchy songs that packed a punch.

Then, on November 24, 2019, Hara took her own life and passed away.

The pain in our hearts does not go away.

Whether we are supporters or not, we must confront the weight of the words we direct at others.

Even now, the members kindly communicate with fans through social media, sometimes using Japanese as well.

I truly want every one of them to be happy from the bottom of my heart—they will always be a monumental presence.

Feel SpecialTwice

Feel SpecialTwice

TWICE is indispensable when talking about K-pop girl groups.

Their success has won affection far beyond the core K-pop fandom.

The members were selected through the audition program SIXTEEN, and they debuted in 2015 with “Like OOH-AHH.” They already had passionate fans and were making waves at the time, but their next release, 2016’s “CHEER UP,” became a massive hit! Sana’s adorable “shy shy shy” sparked a huge craze.

Then they truly broke through and became top stars with “TT,” which caused a social phenomenon in Japan as well, especially among younger generations, thanks to the “TT pose.” While they had concepts like the cute vibe of early songs portraying girlish emotions and an energetic, cheerful image, they also established a one-of-a-kind, cutting-edge style that vividly captured the traits and emotions of the social media generation.

With members like Momo, known for her outstanding dance skills, and Jihyo and Nayeon, known for their powerful vocals, the group is led strongly while still showcasing the unique charm of each member—their performances are so cool.

In recent years, TWICE has gained even more global popularity with chic, more U.S.-leaning sounds.

The dance track and signature song “Feel Special,” beloved by many, is especially moving for its message that reflects the members’ experiences of supporting each other and overcoming hardships.

They’re charismatic on stage, yet delightfully scatterbrained, charming, and approachable in talk segments—that’s part of their appeal, too.

I wish all nine members happiness and will keep supporting them from here on out!

Hwaa (Fireworks/Spark)(G)I-DLE

(G)I-DLE debuted in 2018.

Signed to CUBE Entertainment, known for strong song releases, the group includes Miyeon—once rumored to debut with BLACKPINK—Minnie from Thailand, Soyeon, the leader and musical linchpin, Yuqi from China who’s in charge of aegyo, and Shuhua from Taiwan with a pure image.

Sujin left the group in August 2021.

Their performances on the survival show Queendom were awesome, too.

Unusually for a girl group, they self-produce—writing lyrics, composing, and choreographing themselves.

From their debut track LATATA to the 2021 hit HWAA, Soyeon’s talent shines through a wealth of songs that captivate with an oriental allure and undeniable power.

They’re seriously addictive.

True to their name, this girl group sparkles as a gathering of distinct personalities.

Their title track and signature song “DUN DUN” from their first mini album released in 2020 surpassed 200 million views on its music video, raising expectations for them as a next-generation girl group.

Beyond their captivating visuals, their catchy melodies infused with girl-crush elements are truly addictive.

Their style is a polished, cool dance tune through and through.

Listening to EVERGLOW’s music at night will lift your mood even more.

GOOD NIGHTDreamcatcher

GOOD NIGHTDreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher, affectionately known by the nickname “Duke” in Japan, debuted as a seven-member group in 2017 when Handong and Gahyeon joined the former group MINX.

Unlike MINX’s cheerful vibe, they’ve built their identity around a “nightmare” concept.

Their singular fusion of metal and K-pop sets them apart from typical idol images and captivates fans.

Alongside the two mentioned, JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami all boast overwhelming performance power and charisma—they’re seriously cool! Their world, highlighted by high-velocity tracks like “GOOD NIGHT,” blends a rock-driven aesthetic with a mysterious allure.

Each song comes with a defined concept, and they even reveal a “mystery code” that hints at the next theme—another fun touch.

They’re also active in Japan, steadily growing their popularity through collaborations with games and a style that pairs well with anime songs.

BBoom BBoom (뿜뿜)momoland

BBoom BBoom (뿜뿜)momoland

MOMOLAND, who were selected through Mnet’s survival audition program “Finding MOMOLAND,” debuted in 2016.

The original lineup consisted of Hyebin, JooE, Nancy, Ahin, Yeonwoo, Nayun, and Jane, and in 2017 Daisy and Taeha joined, making it a nine-member group.

However, in 2019 Yeonwoo and Taeha announced their departure, and Daisy also effectively left, leaving them as a six-member group.

They’re known for many songs with addictive hooks and highly catchy melodies, and their 3rd mini album “GREAT!” released in 2018 produced the massive hit title track “BBoom BBoom.” It created such a huge buzz that even top idols like TWICE and Wanna One got hooked.

They also made their Japan debut that same year.

While their comedic vibe was memorable, in recent years they’ve exuded a stronger, stylish image.

Their music is based on disco-inspired pop, which might particularly resonate with people who liked T-ARA.

Their sexy appeal is also spot-on without feeling overdone.

I sincerely hope they can overcome everything ahead.

ASAPSTAYC

ASAPSTAYC

STAYC debuted in 2020 as High Up Entertainment’s first girl group.

As they’re produced by Black Eyed Pilseung—the company’s founders and the hitmakers behind songs for TWICE, Apink, SISTAR, and more—they’re one of the most anticipated girl groups.

Sumin, Sieun, ISA, Seeun, Yoon, and J each have visuals that are often said to make them all “visual members.” Be sure to check out each member’s role models, too.

The group name, an abbreviation of “Star To A Young Culture,” carries the meaning of “becoming stars who lead young culture,” projecting a glamorous and colorful identity.

Their 2021 second single album track “ASAP” went viral thanks to the “kkukki dance,” climbing back up the charts for a long-running hit! With the “TeenFresh” concept that blends teenage vibes and freshness, their music is a real mood booster.

With their cute charm, they may be especially appealing to Japanese fans—definitely one to watch!

Rollin’Brave Girls

[MV] Brave Girls(브레이브걸스) _ Rollin'(롤린) (New Version)
Rollin'Brave Girls

Brave Girls, also known as Bbugol, debuted in 2011.

They started as a five-member group with Eunyoung, SeoA, Yejin, Yujin, and Hyeran.

After several lineup changes, as of 2021 they’ve been active as a four-member group.

When you think of Brave Girls, their breakout hit Rollin’ comes to mind! Although the song was released in 2017, it became beloved among Korean men as a “Milboard” classic—a military + Billboard portmanteau—and when a video of their military consolation performance was uploaded in 2021, it caught fire and shot back up the charts.

Their steady efforts, including appearing on the reboot survival show The Unit, also contributed to their resurgence.

You could call them late bloomers, but the consistent, exceptional quality of their music earned them a loyal following.

Since breaking through, they’ve delivered tracks with a retro vibe and city-pop flavor, like We Ride.

Their choreography is cool, and that fresh yet mature, coming-of-age feel is just the best!
