Practice Songs Helpful for Learning Mixed Voice (Middle Voice) [For Women]
The term “mixed voice.” If you’re interested in singing, you’ve probably heard or seen it at least once.
Many of my vocal training students say, “I want to be able to use mixed voice!” However, I feel that surprisingly few people actually understand what it is.
So what exactly is mixed voice? Simply put, it’s “the voice between chest voice and head voice.” That’s why it’s also called middle voice.
In actual songs, it’s mainly used to cover the high-tone range that’s hard to hit with chest voice, but by changing the balance of how much chest and head voice you mix, you can create a wide range of vocal expressions.
In this feature, I’ve gathered female singers who skillfully use mixed (middle) voice to express their songs.
I’m sure you’ll find plenty to reference when you practice with the goal of mastering mixed voice yourself.
I hope you find it helpful.

[For Women] Practice Songs Helpful for Learning Mixed Voice (Middle Voice) (1–10)
If you call it loveUru

This is Uru’s 12th single overall, released in June 2022.
It was used as the theme song for TBS’s Sunday drama “My Family.” The term “mixed voice” is somewhat ambiguous, so it’s hard to pinpoint exact moments in the song where it appears.
However, in this slow ballad, I felt Uru skillfully switches among a variety of techniques: using a chest-leaning mixed voice in the mid-to-high ranges of the A and B sections, and spanning from chest-leaning mixed voice to falsetto-leaning mixed voice in the chorus.
Pay attention to the contrast with the high chest voice that comes in right after the instrumental break.
This track serves as a very useful reference for the diverse ways mixed voice can be employed.
Magic hourRyokushokushakai

It’s Ryokuoushoku Shakai’s seventh single overall, released in August 2023.
It was used as an insert song for Fuji TV’s Monday 9 p.m.
drama “Midsummer Cinderella.” As for Haruko Nagaya’s vocals on this track, it seems she effectively uses a falsetto-leaning mixed voice, especially during the brief moment in the chorus where the vocal melody jumps slightly higher.
With normal falsetto, you’d typically place the sound in the nasal cavity, but for the relevant spots in this song, try producing the tone like falsetto while broadly placing the resonance against the upper palate.
You should be able to achieve a mixed voice like hers—very soft yet rich in high-order overtones.
UNDEADYOASOBI

YOASOBI’s new song “UNDEAD.” Among YOASOBI’s tracks, this one is especially difficult, featuring such extreme rises and falls in pitch that you could say it practically only works with Vocaloid.
The pitch swings in the chorus are particularly intense, with low and high notes interwoven within the same phrases.
There are also many sections where a mixed voice is required, so delivering the song end to end demands substantial pitch control and vocal stamina.
If you’re confident in your singing ability, consider adding this piece to your repertoire.
LuluAdo

Ado’s hit number “Lulu.” It features a style similar to her signature song “Usseewa,” and drew nationwide attention with its intense lyrics and melody.
From the perspective of mixed voice technique, this piece is extremely challenging.
The pitch movement is very dramatic, and there are multiple sections that call for shouts.
On top of that, you need to sing using a mixed voice, which demands considerable pitch control and solid fundamental vocal skills.
If you’re confident in your singing ability, be sure to give it a try.
DearREOL

Reol is a female singer-songwriter who has gained popularity for her sharp musical style.
This piece adds a touch of hip-hop to the electro-pop sound she excels at.
It repeatedly features her hallmark crisp high notes, showcasing a wide range of high-register techniques from mixed voice to falsetto.
With its broad vocal range, it’s a great song to practice singing in mixed voice while keeping stamina in mind.
If you’re an intermediate or advanced singer, consider adding it to your repertoire.
