There are many universities in the Kanto area, and during the campus festival seasons in spring and autumn, festivals are held every year with a wide variety of themes and concepts.

Wakaba Festival | Japan University of NutritionSaitama Prefecture, Sat. 5/23–Sun. 5/24

Student-Organized Screening | Japan Institute of the Moving ImageFri 5/15 – Sun 5/17, Kanagawa Prefecture

The late film director Shohei Imamura, a two-time Palme d’Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival, founded the Japan Institute of the Moving Image as a place dedicated to studying film, in response to the decline of traditional movie studios. Seiryo Festival | Yokohama National UniversityKanagawa Prefecture, Sat 5/16–Sun 5/17

At Yokohama National University, two campus festivals are held each year: the Seiryo Festival in spring and the Tokiwai Festival in autumn, with the latter being the more representative event, featuring over 130 participating groups. The expansive, beautiful campus, immersed each year in a world crafted around a set theme, is truly breathtaking.

Tanabata Festival | Keio University (Shonan Fujisawa Campus)Kanagawa Prefecture, Sat. 7/4 – Sun. 7/5

At Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa Campus, the Tanabata Festival is held every year on the first Saturday of July. With a theme of “Tanabata × Summer Festival × Community Focus,” many attendees wear yukata. It’s said that many local residents also come to enjoy the event. The festival culminates with a fireworks display.
