The Wind Rises (1–10)
Castorp (The Magic Mountain)Joe Hisaishi

The protagonist, Jiro Horikoshi, meets a German man named Castorp at a hotel.
Although he shares the same name as the piece’s title, this character’s name comes from Hans Castorp, the protagonist of Thomas Mann’s masterpiece The Magic Mountain.
It’s a somewhat wistful piece of music.
Nahoko (Encounter)Joe Hisaishi
This is a piece called “Nahoko (Encounter).” The title includes “Encounter,” but it isn’t the cheerful song you might imagine from that.
War and natural disasters—Nahoko and Jiro met in the very midst of a turbulent era.
While everyone was lamenting the misfortunes of the world, the two refused to yield to fate and came together.
It’s a song that reminds us of the importance of our encounters with others.
Journey (Winds of Italy)Joe Hisaishi

Do you have someone you call a benefactor? You can never thank a benefactor enough, can you? This soundtrack takes that very theme.
Its slow, calm tempo that exudes respect and the mellow tone of the organ evoke a sense of reverence for one’s benefactor.
It’s a recommended track full of dignity and warmth.
The wind rises.Joe Hisaishi

This is a piece with a beautiful, memorable melody used in The Wind Rises.
Its title links to the work itself, and it could be called the film’s underlying theme.
Airplanes ride the wind, and it feels as if the music expresses both the uncertainty and the freshness of that wind at the same time.

A Wizard of Earthsea (1–10)
Song of TimeAoi Teshima

This is the theme song of Goro Miyazaki’s film Tales from Earthsea.
“Therru’s Song” might be more well-known, but this one is also a wonderful piece.
The clear, translucent vocals and piano are beautiful, evoking a sense of nostalgia and emotion.
It’s well worth a listen!
Teru's SongAoi Teshima

This is a song used in Tales from Earthsea.
Aoi Teshima’s vocals are very beautiful, making it a wonderful track.
Just listening to it is very soothing.
I’d love to listen to it while watching the sunset in a place rich with nature.
It perfectly matches the atmosphere of the film, so please give it a listen.
rowan (tree)Aoi Teshima

Does the word “nanakamado” ring a bell for you? Nanakamado is a type of deciduous tall tree in the rose family.
It’s known for leaves that turn a vivid red in autumn and for its cute, bright-red berries.
With that tall tree in mind, please give this piece a listen.
Doesn’t the bouncy melody sound absolutely charming? The lyrics, which describe oneself growing alongside the nanakamado, are sure to make you feel the passage of time—and a touch of bittersweetness.
