This time, I’ve picked out female singers who are widely regarded as “great” from various angles like these, as well as female singers who, from my years of experience as a vocal producer and voice coach, make me think, “She’s outstanding!”
Of course, a singer’s appeal doesn’t necessarily lie only in technical skill.
But every now and then, isn’t it nice to listen with a focus on “skill”?

horizonHaneda Risa
Risa Haneda is a singer-songwriter who has been active under her current name since 2013.
I must admit my ignorance: I listened to this song, “Suiheisen” (Horizon), for the first time in order to write this piece.
Right from the start, her wonderfully beautiful falsetto scat bursts in, and that alone made me think, “She’s no ordinary talent!” The song itself is a very pretty ballad arranged with elegant simplicity, but within this minimal backing, her vocal expression alone fully conveys the world of the piece.
I found her expressive power truly outstanding.

YUI’s first single, released in February 2005.
At the time of this release she was still only 17.
While her vocals aren’t the kind that overwhelm you like a full-fledged powerhouse singer, she delivers a very steady performance that uses her “youth” as a strength, revealing how capable she already was.
It’s a track aspiring singers should definitely take as a reference.
EarnestJunko Sera (ALHAMBRA)
The lead track from Japanese HM/HR band ALHAMBRA’s album “The Earnest Trilogy,” released in December 2016.
If I recall correctly, I handled the vocal recording, mixing, and mastering for this album, and hearing Junko’s vocals live in the studio was truly remarkable.
It was astounding how she maintained those high notes throughout the entire recording session without any decline.
This is a work I highly recommend female metal singers listen to and learn from!
