[Challenge] Practice Songs for Beginner Electric Guitar Players

Have you ever listened to a rock band and thought, “I want to try playing guitar too!”? I bet many people have felt that way.

Still, it’s common to hesitate, thinking “Guitar seems difficult…,” or to buy a guitar but not know which song to start with.

We’ve all been there.

In this article, I’ll introduce plenty of songs that are perfect for electric guitar beginners to practice.

Of course, basic exercises are important, but it’s hard to keep going with just that.

So find a song you like from the ones introduced here, and aim to improve while having fun playing!

[Alexandros] is a four-piece rock band that captivates fans with songs that sprinkle modern essence into a classic rock sound.

Their major-label debut single Watari-dori, released as a double A-side with Dracula La, is still known as one of their signature tracks.

The guitar riff in the intro, which sets the tone for the song, actually uses only four notes and is simple, making it something any guitarist will want to play.

The rhythm section is also straightforward in terms of playing skill, but because drive and bounce are crucial, beginner band members should practice syncing tightly with one another.

A song by Harukamirai, a four-piece rock band from Hachioji, Tokyo, who made their major debut in 2019.

It’s a mid-tempo rock number with standout catchy vocals and prominently featured guitars.

Aside from switching between clean and distorted tones, the guitar parts mainly strum chords, so even beginner guitarists can easily copy them.

There’s no guitar solo, the tempo is relaxed, and the song is simple, but because the guitar sound stands out, any mistakes will be noticeable.

Don’t let its simplicity lull you—focus on producing solid, reliable sound.

Songs you can play on electric guitar aren’t limited to rock band tracks! So how about boldly tackling some buzzworthy J‑POP that’s been arranged for band? A great recommendation for that is Yuuri’s “Dry Flower.” It’s a slow-tempo ballad that I think is approachable even for beginner guitarists.

Basically it’s centered on open chords, with some barre chords and 7th chords appearing; there are parts where the chord changes are quick, but since the overall tempo is slow, you should be able to play it with practice.

The lead guitar arpeggios also require little movement up and down the fretboard and are easy to play, yet they add a lead-guitar-like sparkle to the song, so it’s fun to perform.

Shunkan SentimentalSCANDAL

A song by the four-piece girls’ rock band SCANDAL that was used as an ending theme for the TV anime Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

It’s a track with many spotlight moments for the guitar, such as a catchy intro riff and a guitar solo that uses octave techniques.

Since it doesn’t feature particularly fast phrases or difficult techniques, even beginner guitarists should be able to learn it easily.

Simple yet attention-grabbing, it’s a welcome song for guitar novices.

Heroineback number

back number – Heroine (full)

This is the 11th single by back number, a three-piece rock band known for their poignant lyrics and gentle vocals.

Whether performed as an acoustic guitar solo or as an electric guitar band arrangement, it’s perfect for guitar beginners because there’s no guitar solo and you can play it using only chord strumming.

The chorus does include a few slightly challenging chords, but if you start practicing at a slow tempo and get used to the chord changes, you’ll definitely be able to play it.

Give it a try!

honeyL’Arc〜en〜Ciel

A four-piece rock band, L’Arc~en~Ciel, known for showcasing a wide range of styles from complex compositions to pop tunes, released this as their 10th single.

It was one of three singles released simultaneously alongside “Kasou” and “Shinsoku ~lose control~,” and it became their first million-selling hit—one of the band’s signature songs.

While guitarist ken’s parts feature quite a few intricate phrases, hyde’s parts consist only of chord strumming and power chords, making them approachable even for beginner guitarists.

It also works well in a full band setting, so it’s an easy song to try.

Once you’re comfortable with hyde’s part, you can move on to learning ken’s, allowing you to enjoy the song in multiple ways.

TRAIN TRAINTHE BLUE HEARTS

TRAIN TRAINTHE BLUE HEARTS

A four-piece punk rock band, THE BLUE HEARTS, left behind numerous legends and had a huge influence on later bands.

This song has a driving feel, yet the guitar playing is simple and not fast, making it an easy number for beginner guitarists to play together in a band.

One point to note is that techniques like cutting and brushing, which give the song its energy and dynamics, are key, so practicing your right hand is more important than your left.

If you practice with a clear awareness of where to let notes ring and where to mute them, you’ll be able to play it.

For beginner guitarists, getting a feel for this with this song will likely make practicing other songs easier as well.
