Lanterns with mason jars

Lanterns with mason jars

If you want to make an original Jack-o’-lantern, here’s a craft using a mason jar.

First, get a mason jar, such as one from a 100-yen shop.

Next, print your favorite illustration and place it inside.

You’ll be able to see the illustration from the outside, so trace it with a felt-tip pen.

Finally, add a light and you’re done.

If you have small children or pets at home, using a battery-powered lamp is safer.

Use any illustration you like and create a one-of-a-kind Jack-o’-lantern.

The milk carton lantern, which reuses empty milk cartons instead of throwing them away, is an eco-friendly Halloween lantern perfect for our modern times, where we increasingly hear terms like sustainability and the SDGs.

The method is very simple: after cutting the milk carton, apply double-sided tape and attach black construction paper.

Finally, cut out window and door shapes—and you’re done.

When you place a light inside, it shines nicely through the window and door openings, creating an authentic Halloween atmosphere!

Black Cat and Jack-o'-Lantern

For those who want to decorate their room with a cute vibe, a black cat and a pumpkin lantern are perfect.

Since you won’t need scissors or a cutter, even small children can give it a try.

First, prepare a plastic cup.

Next, cut origami paper into rectangles and paste them on in a radial pattern.

Then attach the eyes and mouth parts to complete the pumpkin section.

After that, make the black cat’s head and both paws, and stick them to the rim of the cup to finish.

It should work well if you position the black cat as though it’s peeking outside.

Lampshade made with a balloon and tissue paper

Authentic with balloons and tissue paper! “Halloween Pumpkin Lampshade” / [OT’s Let’s Make It! Vol. 8] (Recreation/Crafts)
Lampshade made with a balloon and tissue paper

A cute pumpkin lampshade.

It looks difficult, but it’s actually very easy to make.

You’ll need a balloon, tissue paper, white craft glue, and so on.

Inflate the balloon and fix it to a base, then start applying tissue paper that’s been brushed with craft glue thinned with water.

Use orange tissue paper to match a pumpkin’s color.

Keep layering tissue until the balloon’s color underneath no longer shows through, then attach eyes and a mouth made from origami paper and let it dry thoroughly.

Once it’s dry, pop the balloon inside and remove it, trim the opening neatly, and place an LED light inside—and you’re done! A pumpkin lantern glowing in a dark room creates a perfect atmosphere.

cotton ball

[Halloween Decorations] I tried making a simple light with a balloon and yarn from the 100-yen shop together with my cat. When you decorate a bay window or the entrance, the illumination looks really beautiful. Lay cotton on top of the light, then coordinate the look.

Lanterns made with cotton balls are quite unique, so I definitely recommend them! They’re very easy to make.

First, inflate a balloon to just under 7 cm in diameter.

Next, mix wood glue and water at a 1:1 ratio, and use that liquid to wrap thread around the balloon.

Finally, hang it on a clothesline to dry for about a day, then pop the balloon and remove it from the inside.

When removing the balloon, it’s easier if you pull it out from the tied end.

Once you get the hang of it, try switching the yarn colors to Halloween-themed ones like purple or orange for a fun variation.

Origami Lantern

Origami Lantern

How about a lantern made with origami that brings a touch of warmth from paper and puts you in a slightly cozy mood? All you need is orange origami paper.

However, since there are many folds, I recommend making it when you have some time.

The origami lantern has a very simple process—fold into a diamond shape, open part of it, and make a triangle, repeating that—so even people who aren’t confident with origami can give it a try.

Just be careful: paper is flammable, so if there are small children around, make sure a parent does it together with them!

How about livening up Halloween with a lantern inspired by Boo, the white ghost from the Mario series? Prepare a white paper cup and attach face and hand parts made from construction paper.

With the face facing forward, place the paper cup down and punch holes near the top on the left and right.

Thread a string through the holes and tie it to a straw, then pop an LED light into the cup and you’re done! Since the light doesn’t generate heat, it’s safe for kids to carry.

It’s an easy yet adorable Halloween craft that everyone is sure to compliment.
