Cake and gift box

Do you know Matthew Reinhart? He’s the most famous pop-up book creator in the world.
Pop-up books—also called movable books—have many collectors around the globe.
Why not try making a pop-up message card that turns three-dimensional when opened—something anyone would be happy to receive? If you remember making one during elementary school art class, follow that memory and give it a try.
First-timers need not worry.
You can craft a pop-up cake in about three steps—use the how-to video as a guide and let’s give it a challenge! Once you understand the pop-up mechanism, you can customize the popping elements—like a bouquet or a little doll—to your own taste.
Choose what pops up based on the recipient’s preferences.
Handwritten POP

When you go to a video rental shop or a bookstore, you sometimes see handwritten POP signs, right? Those eye-catching tags like “Staff Picks!!” really stand out.
How about writing a message card inspired by those POP displays? The basics are a combination of large and small lettering.
Write “Happy Birthday” in big letters, and next to it, add a smaller note expressing your everyday gratitude.
For the large text, decorate it to make it pop—outline it with colored pens or add glitter for sparkle.
The key to this card is the contrast between the large and small text.
Adding small illustrations, like party poppers or a cake, will also be a hit.
dot pen

If you want to add a stylish touch easily, I recommend using a dotting pen.
A dotting pen is a type of nail tool that lets you draw perfectly round dots.
It’s simple to use—just tap it lightly to make clean circles.
You can use a dotting pen to complete illustrations and patterns.
For example, how about drawing dots inside letters, or drawing letters inside dots? You could even use it to represent the candles on a cake.

Here’s a handmade card idea featuring a striking, three-dimensional oversized ribbon.
Create the base by folding a sheet of construction paper in half, then glue a white sheet on the cover that has two strip-cut pieces of construction paper crossed in a plus sign.
Adding a large ribbon on top makes the card look like a present.
To make the ribbon, cut slits from each of the four corners of a square piece of construction paper toward the center, then glue the separated corners to the center.
Adding highlights with a white pen will give the ribbon even more dimension.
A card that reveals a photo and a message when you pull it
How about making a card where the heart pieces flip and flutter when you pull the base? You can stick photos or write messages on the hearts, so it’s perfect for anyone thinking of a memorable Valentine’s gift.
Place a 7 cm × 12 cm sheet of construction paper on top of a 7 cm × 17 cm sheet and tape them together, then draw five horizontal lines 1 cm apart from the bottom on the 7 cm × 12 cm sheet.
Fold the papers in half so that the sheet with the lines is on the outside, then attach the heart pieces along the lines.
Finally, wrap a strip-shaped piece around the overlapped section of the papers, and attach a ribbon to the topmost heart to finish.
