dot pen

If you want to add a stylish touch easily, I recommend using a dotting pen.
A dotting pen is a type of nail tool that lets you draw perfectly round dots.
It’s simple to use—just tap it lightly to make clean circles.
You can use a dotting pen to complete illustrations and patterns.
For example, how about drawing dots inside letters, or drawing letters inside dots? You could even use it to represent the candles on a cake.
washi tape

The English term “checkered pattern” refers to ichimatsu, a traditional Japanese checkerboard design.
It surged in popularity after being used prominently on the costumes of characters in the hit anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
Other classic Japanese patterns you often see include seigaiha (blue ocean waves) and shippo (seven treasures), which appear in designs for shoji screens and furoshiki wrapping cloths.
Message cards unified with wagara (traditional Japanese patterns) give off a calm, mature vibe.
Try making a lovely card by shaping candles and cakes with washi masking tape or stickers featuring wagara! You could also cut out patterns from wrapping paper or paper bags.
If you look around, you might be surprised how many wagara papers you can find!
Character design
How about trying to design a popular character? It could be anything—an anime character everyone knows, or a local mascot the recipient likes.
Think about “What kind of character would make them happy?” There are many ways to incorporate it when you draw, too.
You can design it along the edge of the message card, or add a speech bubble so the character can ‘talk.’ Try approaching it with a free, creative mindset.
Handmade card with washi tape garland

Perfect for expressing your feelings! Here are some handmade ideas for message cards.
The main design is a garland made with washi tape.
First, attach pieces of washi tape to a string at equal intervals.
Fold each piece of tape over the string so it sandwiches it, then trim the corners to make a flag shape.
Punch holes in the base card, thread the garland string through, and stick it down at a diagonal.
Add a photo of the child, write their name and your message, and you’re done!
Card with a big ribbon

Here’s a handmade card idea featuring a striking, three-dimensional oversized ribbon.
Create the base by folding a sheet of construction paper in half, then glue a white sheet on the cover that has two strip-cut pieces of construction paper crossed in a plus sign.
Adding a large ribbon on top makes the card look like a present.
To make the ribbon, cut slits from each of the four corners of a square piece of construction paper toward the center, then glue the separated corners to the center.
Adding highlights with a white pen will give the ribbon even more dimension.
A card that reveals a photo and a message when you pull it
How about making a card where the heart pieces flip and flutter when you pull the base? You can stick photos or write messages on the hearts, so it’s perfect for anyone thinking of a memorable Valentine’s gift.
Place a 7 cm × 12 cm sheet of construction paper on top of a 7 cm × 17 cm sheet and tape them together, then draw five horizontal lines 1 cm apart from the bottom on the 7 cm × 12 cm sheet.
Fold the papers in half so that the sheet with the lines is on the outside, then attach the heart pieces along the lines.
Finally, wrap a strip-shaped piece around the overlapped section of the papers, and attach a ribbon to the topmost heart to finish.

A card with a beautiful rose that pops out

Let’s send our gratitude to Grandma and Grandpa with a card featuring a beautiful rose! First, cut out three circles of the same size from construction paper in your favorite color.
Fold one of the circles into a shape resembling a triangle, make petal-shaped cuts, and then unfold it.
After unfolding, use a thin stick or similar tool to gently curl the edges of the petals.
For the other two circles, follow almost the same steps, but be careful: the number of petals and the way you make the cuts will differ.
Once each piece is shaped, layer them together—using any extra petals as well—and glue them onto the base card.
Finish it off by arranging them into a rose, and your card is complete!
