Message card with cherry blossom tree and school building

How to make thank-you message cards from lower grades to sixth graders
Message card with cherry blossom tree and school building

Here’s an idea for a message card that makes the picture look three-dimensional.

In this design, there’s a school in the center of the card and cherry trees at both ends.

First, fold a piece of drawing paper in half and draw two vertical lines in the center.

Draw them so they’re equally spaced above and below the fold line created by the crease.

Then draw two more vertical lines inside those, each half the length of the first ones.

Draw these above the center crease.

Using those lines, sketch the school in a convex (pop-out) shape, cut along the lines with a craft knife, and mountain-fold along the center crease to make the school pop up.

For the cherry trees, fold a strip of paper into a V shape, add glue tabs at both ends, and attach it to the drawing paper; then stick on the cherry tree illustrations you drew.

Finally, mount the whole piece onto a backing sheet and write your message.

It’s easier than it looks, so give it a try!

Message card made with masking tape

A handy masking tape you can buy at 100-yen shops and the like.

Here, we use that masking tape to make a garland and incorporate it into a postcard design.

First, cut the masking tape into pieces about 6 cm long and stick them onto a piece of yarn at equal intervals.

Place the yarn right in the middle of the tape and fold the adhesive sides together to seal it.

Once you’re done sticking, cut the ends of the masking tape into triangles with scissors, punch two holes in the postcard, and thread it through.

Add a message and decorate the remaining space, and you’re done.

Mini love letter card

This is a Valentine’s card made by placing a message card inside tiny love letters folded from small origami paper.

Fold three mini love letters and attach them vertically to a backing sheet.

Then decorate the remaining space on the backing with heart or alphabet stickers, and it’s done.

Prepare origami paper in pink and chocolate colors.

It also looks great framed as a gift, so customizing the design is recommended.

In that case, try decorating the mini love letters with ribbons or adding character stickers for a cute touch.

A heart that opens message card

Simple and easy: Opening Heart [How to make a message card]
A heart that opens message card

Would you like to make a heart-shaped message card? First, prepare a square sheet of origami paper or cardstock.

Fold it into a square twice and into a triangle twice to create creases forming a plus sign and an X.

Once the creases are made, place the paper in a diamond orientation.

Mountain-fold the horizontal crease in the center and collapse the paper into a small square.

Next, fold along the creases to make a triangle.

Leaving the center of the paper intact, draw half of a heart shape and cut it out with scissors.

Unfold the paper back to the step before it was folded into a triangle, and it should form a heart shape.

If you want to keep the heart shape in place, make a ring from a thin strip of cardstock and thread it through the top part of the heart.

Card painting

A message card that creates beautiful patterns just by sliding a card sideways♪
Card painting

This is an idea for creating patterns by sliding paint sideways with a plastic sheet on a postcard.

First, apply the first color vertically along the edge of the postcard, leaving small gaps.

Then place the next color beside it, filling in the gaps you left.

By applying the paint so that it won’t mix when you slide it sideways, you’ll get a clean striped pattern.

You can create a variety of designs depending on how you place the paint and move the plastic sheet.

Give different approaches a try! Once the paint is dry, add a handwritten message.

First, fold a sheet of origami paper into a triangle three times.

Once folded, draw half of a heart along the edge, leaving the corner that is the center of the paper intact, then cut along the line with scissors and open it up.

Fold it in half along the main crease, then use the remaining creases to alternately valley-fold and mountain-fold to create a heart-shaped booklet.

Finally, write your message on the inside pages, and you’re done! It’s very easy and turns out super cute, so give it a try!

Next, attach thick paper cut into shapes like hearts or stars onto the postcard so that you can remove them later.

Then, drop in marbles coated with paint and roll them around—done! Hold the tissue box and tilt it left and right to roll the marbles; they’ll leave patterned trails as they move.

Finally, peel off the thick paper and write your message in the white areas to finish.

Pop-up 3D chocolate card

It looks just like real chocolate! Here’s a handmade card idea that will make you want to take a bite just by looking at it.

In this idea, you create a chocolate bar by sticking small pieces of the same-colored paper onto a rectangular sheet of brown construction paper.

Using thick double-sided tape for the adhesive gives it a three-dimensional finish.

To make it even more chocolate-bar-like, wrap aluminum foil around the bottom half, then layer a piece of origami paper on top to mimic the wrapper.

Finally, attach the chocolate bar to the card cover and decorate it with a ribbon.

Paste white paper on the inside, write your message, and you’re done!
