While there are some common patterns—like 100-yen shop DIYs and material-based designs—there’s also lots of room to adapt ideas from all kinds of things.

With a bit of creativity, you can make something really fun!

In this article, we’ll introduce recommended projects that are great for inspiration, including easy-to-use perpetual calendar styles.

We hope this gives you the push to start making your own calendar!

How about an ultra-stylish “tear-off calendar–style sharing file” made entirely with 100-yen-shop materials? It can also be set up like a desktop calendar, adding a nice accent to your room! The process is surprisingly simple: just stick patterned paper or envelopes onto postcard-sized kraft paper.

That said, your sense of design might be put to the test! It’s a calendar full of creative touches—make pockets to hold memo paper, or create spaces to display photos from the day.

You can punch a hole at the top and thread a ring through it, so it’s secure even if it gets a bit thick.

[100-yen DIY – Felt] Splatoon Calendar

[100-yen DIY - Felt] Splatoon Calendar

Splatoon is a hugely popular action shooting game released by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch.

The game features unique and adorable squid characters, right? How about a tear-off daily calendar arranged with those squid characters and ink patterns? If you make the characters out of felt and use stencil sheets for the date numbers, you can really capture the game’s vibe! It’s the type you attach to a whiteboard with magnets, so changing the date is a breeze.

Kids are sure to love it, too.

Rotary paper cup

DIY! How to make a perpetual calendar with paper cups — easy!
Rotary paper cup

This is an ultra-easy rotating daily calendar you can make with things you already have at home using paper cups! It’s also great to craft with kids, so why not have fun making one together? All you need are three plain paper cups, a pen, and scissors—just three items! First, stack the three paper cups and write the ones-place digits of the date all the way around the bottom cup.

Using the same method, write the tens-place digits on the second cup.

Tip: write the tens-place numbers slightly higher than where you wrote the ones-place numbers! Next, cut a window in the cup with the tens-place numbers so that the ones-place digits are visible when the cups are stacked.

Finally, cut a window in the third cup so that both the ones-place and tens-place numbers are visible, and the base of your calendar is complete! Try drawing pictures or decorating it with washi tape any way you like.

lettering

Beautifully designed letters are called lettering.

Precisely because we write by hand less in modern times, I’d love for people to discover the charm of lettering! Why not try making a daily tear-off calendar using lettering? It’s perfect for those who enjoy drawing letters or are interested in decorative type.

There are countless lettering styles, so look at images for inspiration and put your feelings into each stroke.

A calendar you draw page by page yourself will surely become something you feel attached to.

Display it on a mini easel and it will add a stylish accent to your room.

[100-Yen Shop DIY] Set-style card

[100-Yen Shop DIY] Set-style card

This is a card-set daily flip calendar you can make on a budget using only items from the 100-yen shop.

Since it’s a card-set type, you can reuse it next year and the year after, which makes it a great deal! Another benefit is that flipping it together with your child can help them learn a sense of dates.

Use a horizontally long photo frame (also available at the 100-yen shop) as the calendar base.

Print the month, day, and day of the week on A4 cardstock to make the cards.

Laminating the cards will increase their durability and make them more resistant to dirt, even when handled by small children.

Attach hooks to the photo frame, punch holes in the cards, and set them in place—that’s it! It could also be fun to add weather cards like sunny and rainy.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar desktop daily tear-off calendar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar desktop daily tear-off calendar

The picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is beloved around the world, isn’t it? How about arranging the characters from this hugely popular book into a daily tear-off calendar? It would be great for families with children and would make a lovely gift, so I highly recommend it.

Create the caterpillar’s body by connecting oval pieces cut from colored construction paper.

At the same time, cut out the calendar parts—month, date, and day of the week—from construction paper as well.

Making each one in the shape of an apple, a plum, or a pear would be adorable! Laminating the caterpillar and the calendar pieces will make them sturdier, so that’s recommended too.

Decorate the calendar base with stickers and other accents to give it an Eric Carle-style finish.

Retro style made with stencils

Things I made (a tear-off daily calendar, a sticker storage book using 100-yen shop materials)
Retro style made with stencils

This is a page-a-day calendar that uses stencil techniques, featuring stylish retro prints.

Stenciling is a method of transferring designs by spraying or painting color over a sheet with letters or patterns cut out.

For the paper that holds the dates, we use cake liners that you can buy at 100-yen shops.

They look beautifully translucent when the letters are transferred, so they’re highly recommended! You can use either store-bought or homemade stencil sheets.

When transferring, acrylic paint is best because it’s water-resistant, so give it a try.
