[Drawing Paper] Snake Ema (votive plaque)

Since 2025 is the Year of the Snake, let’s make a cute snake ema (wooden wish plaque).
All you need to do is cut out parts from colored construction paper and glue them on, so it’s perfect to make with your child.
First, cut out the base of the ema and the snake’s tail from green paper.
Similarly, cut out the snake’s belly from cream-colored paper and a bow to decorate the chest area from red paper.
Attach the belly and bow to the lower part of the base, and the tail to the lower right, and you’re done! If you draw guide lines, it can also be good scissor practice for kids.
Ema made with foam board and yarn

Let’s make an ema (votive plaque) using a “decopane,” a foam board often used for POP displays.
First, cut the decopane into the shape of an ema.
Since we want only the frame, hollow out the inside.
You’ll use the inner piece later, so cut it out cleanly.
Once you have just the frame, decorate it by wrapping thick yarn (you can get it at a 100-yen shop) around it.
Then attach white paper to the piece you cut out earlier and place it back inside the frame.
Punch a hole in the ema, thread a chenille stem (pipe cleaner) through it, and write your wish to finish! Wrapping the yarn is a lot of fun, so be sure to pick your favorite yarn and give it a try.
In conclusion
We’ve shared plenty of handmade ema ideas.
Since they’re all easy to make with familiar materials like origami paper and construction paper, it should be easy to give them a try! The time you spend making them with your children or friends will surely become a fun memory.
How about starting the new year with a one-of-a-kind ema filled with your wishes?
