Book cover

[Elderly Recreation] Rec Craftsman Series Part 198: “Easy Felt Book Cover”
Book cover

Let me share an idea for making a no-sew book cover.

It’s easy to make, so it’s great as a kids’ craft too.

First, cut a piece of felt slightly larger than the size of the book.

Once the felt is cut, fold both ends inward and glue them down to finish the cover.

You can use two colors of felt to make a bicolor design, and adding a ribbon bookmark would be cute as well.

If a solid color feels too plain, make some felt motifs and stick them on.

Let me introduce felt snap hair clips.

Prepare simple snap clips.

Cut two pieces of felt with lining to match the size and shape you want to make.

Decorate the felt with lace, ribbons, and buttons.

Adding embroidery would also make it look cute.

Thread the felt that will be the lining through the clip, add decorations, and place some stuffing between the felt layers.

Sew around the edges while attaching beads, and you’re done.

You’ll have a one-of-a-kind, original snap hair clip.

Photo frame

I tried making a photo frame with felt from the 100-yen shop! Time-lapse
Photo frame

Why not try making a warm, cozy frame out of felt fabric? Create the base and frame parts with thick paperboard, then attach felt on top.

After sewing the base and frame together with thread, use a blanket stitch to sew around the inner edge of the frame as well.

Next, make alphabet letters or your favorite character motifs and sew them onto the frame to finish.

This frame can’t stand on its own, so make a hook with ribbon or similar material and attach it to the back.

That way, you can hang it on the wall.

storage divider

storage divider

Dividers that make effective use of drawer space are incredibly handy, aren’t they? So let’s make a simple storage divider using felt! Prepare a large piece of felt, apply glue in lines as if dividing the fabric into thirds, and layer the felt.

Next, apply glue as if dividing it into quarters.

Repeat this a few times, then cut the felt in half and stick the pieces together.

And that’s actually it! When you open it up, it looks like a mesh, forming a proper storage divider.

It’s very easy, so give it a try!

minibasket

minibasket

Here’s an idea for a mini basket you can use to hold treats and other small items.

First, make a pattern and cut the pieces out of felt.

You’ll create the pattern using a muffin cup.

The pieces are the basket bottom, the side panel, the handle, and decorative elements.

Sew the decorations onto the side panel and add embroidery to the handle and side.

Stitch the side into a tube, then attach the bottom piece and the handle to finish.

Instead of embroidery, you can also glue on felt flowers or other embellishments.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar baby hat

A baby cap that keeps your little one warm.

Let’s make it in the shape of the small caterpillar from the popular children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Cut red felt to fit your baby’s head: make one piece a half-circle, and the other a half-circle with a small semicircular opening in the center.

Attach purple felt antennae for the caterpillar, then glue the two red felt pieces together.

Create the eyes and nose from green and yellow felt and attach them to finish! Using a hook-and-loop (Velcro) closure is recommended so you can adjust the size as your baby grows.

key cover

A key cover is an item that protects your key and hides the key number for security by covering the part you hold when inserting the key.

Let’s make a key cover out of felt without using a needle or thread! Once you have felt in your favorite color, cut out two half-circle pieces sized to fit the head of the key you want to cover.

Apply fabric glue along the curved edges of the half-circles, press them together, and turn it inside out.

Next, punch a hole for the key ring, and add decorations like a ribbon if you like—that’s it! You can also add felt decorations to the key ring side if you prefer.
