Handmade haunted house ideas: from ways to darken a room to props

There are times, like at daycares, kindergartens, or school culture festivals, when everyone gets to enjoy making a haunted house together, right?

Here are some handmade ideas that will come in handy for creating a haunted house at those times!

First, we’ll introduce ways to darken the room and how to build the haunted house pathways.

We’ll also share DIY prop ideas to boost the haunted house atmosphere!

Some of the ideas are simple enough for small children to help with, so be sure to use them as a reference.

We hope you can create a fun, unforgettable haunted house.

If you’re making haunted house props where higher quality means bigger scares and you’re unsure what to create, a great recommendation is eyeballs in “formalin” made with clay.

Knead the clay and shape the eyeball into a sphere.

Paint the pupil in the center and add red veins.

If you thoroughly coat the eyeballs with varnish or resin, the clay won’t get soggy even when placed in slime, and they’ll stay in good condition.

Try making a few variations and have fun using them in your haunted house.

You can pretty much guess the typical scare points—like suddenly startling someone with a “Boo!” from around a corner, or having a ghost pop out of a box.

But just as important is steadily building a creepy atmosphere leading up to the scare.

Think frightening illustrations glowing in the dark, tombstone props, a well making an eerie clattering sound, and Noh masks or dolls placed carelessly around.

Splattered animal glue on the walls and soundtracks from films like The Exorcist or Friday the 13th can also be used to great effect.

Eyeball-shaped candies make good participation prizes, too.

Tried out the haunted-house-style maze! A culture festival classic! It was a booth featuring a collaboration between a haunted house and a maze 😆 I had a blast experiencing it with the four PR team members ✨ It was scarier than I expected, with some puzzle-solving mixed in! The same scenery can give a completely different impression by day and by night, right? I’m sure many of you have had the experience of getting unnecessarily lost walking at night on a simple path that’s no problem when it’s bright.

It might be fun to design the flow like a maze that gives people choices—go right or left—instead of just a straightforward haunted house.

If you’re using a classroom that feels a bit cramped for a haunted house, it’ll be even more effective.

There are websites and apps that can generate mazes, so it’s fine even if you can’t make one yourselves.

Just make sure to check how to keep the corridors from getting too narrow!

If you’re going to make a haunted house, it might be best to first decide whether it will be Japanese-style or Western-style—that’ll make it easier to figure out the decorations and overall direction! It’s hard to choose between classic Japanese ghosts like Oiwa and Western staples like zombies or Dracula.

If you go with a Japanese-style haunted house, making a ghostly tanuki the star could be fun.

If your class has time, try making masks from scratch—and of course, make the costumes too.

For the masks, you can stick faux fur onto paper clay and add whiskers and eyelashes with cotton… it’s affordable since you can get everything at the 100-yen shop.

For the costumes, try remaking an old, worn-out chanchanko that you’re planning to throw away.

It’s a simple idea: just stick printed cutouts of ghost faces on corners and other spots.

But the effect is perfect! Since haunted houses are dark, people won’t notice they’re there unless they look closely.

That’s why it’s best to have them shine a light on them.

If you cue the position and timing for the flashlight, a ghostly face will float out of the darkness and give them a scare.

If you have a strobe, you can switch it on as they approach.

If you want to create a low-cost scare spot that gets screams, definitely give this a try.

When it comes to must-haves for a haunted house… that’s right! Ghosts! To fully become a ghost, you’ll need some scary makeup.

Try painting your face white and using red lipstick to create wounds or blood—make a face that anyone would find frightening.

There are plenty of videos with easy makeup tutorials for beginners, like zombie makeup and wound makeup, so why not use those as references? If you don’t want to put makeup on your face, you can buy a white mask and put the makeup on that instead!

There are all sorts of ghost stories about school bathrooms, starting with “Hanako of the Toilet” and “Red Paper, Blue Paper.” Even though they’re places we use every day, many people can’t help but feel they’re scary.

So try setting up a simple toilet in your haunted house and creating a fear trap.

Place a photo of a ghost under the toilet lid with instructions like “Open this,” or make it open automatically the moment a guest walks by.

Even if people are on guard, thinking something might happen, scary things are still scary…!
