baby headband

How to Make Baby Headbands That Match Kimonos [Hinamatsuri] [Dollar Store Items]
baby headband

This is a cute ribbon-shaped headband made with crepe-style fabric scraps.

You can find the fabric scraps, flower organza, ribbons, and braided cords at 100-yen shops.

First, press the fabric scrap with an iron and cut it using a 15 cm × 7 cm pattern.

Next, fold it in half and sew two sides except the folded edge.

Turn it inside out and hand-stitch the opening closed.

Accordion-fold the finished piece and tie the center with thread.

Combine the two pieces, retie with a braided cord, and secure with a glue gun—that’s it! Add any decorations you like to finish it off.

Hinamatsuri costumes made from colored plastic bags

This method uses standard colored plastic bags, which are a staple for making children’s costumes.

First, cut the prepared plastic bag to match the height of the child who will wear it.

Next, use scissors to cut out a hole for the neck and holes for the arms.

Finally, decorate it with parts cut from construction paper and other materials, and it’s done.

Decorating the costume together with the children sounds like it would be fun, too.

If you also make props such as the prince’s crown (odairi-sama no kanmuri) and the princess’s hair ornaments called saishi, the costume will look even more polished.

Cape-style Hinamatsuri costume

This is a cape-style costume that looks perfect for a Hinamatsuri event.

The whole piece is made like a cape from a large piece of fabric, and the layered collars of a jūnihitoe are recreated by stacking felt and sewing it together.

While actually wearing a real jūnihitoe is of course lovely, I think costumes used for recitals and performances are better when they’re easier to put on and take off, so why not use this idea as a reference? With a headpiece or crown and a few props, it can look surprisingly authentic.

I hope you find it useful!

kimono dress

How about a handmade kimono dress that combines lace with chirimen crepe fabric for a cute look? It’s a lot of work to make, but if you choose colors to match each child’s taste, they’ll be delighted—and it becomes a keepsake they’ll remember for a lifetime.

Since little ones are always on the move, a one-piece dress style is reassuring.

Using organza for the obi adds a soft, airy feel and creates a modern, charming vibe.

If you also make a hair accessory with the same fabric, you can enjoy the coordinated look even more!

Rabbit ribbon hair accessory

A rabbit ribbon hair accessory made with chirimen fabric! Animal motifs are a sure hit with kids.

Fold a rectangular piece of chirimen and cinch the center to form the ribbon.

Wrap chirimen around a heart-shaped Styrofoam piece and attach it so it dangles from the ribbon.

Then place the main feature—the rabbit’s face—at the center of the ribbon.

To give the ears a three-dimensional look, fold the chirimen inward and create gentle ripples; that’s the key point.

It might be nice to ask your child what color they like and use chirimen fabric in that color family.

In conclusion

We introduced a variety of handmade outfits for Hinamatsuri! Did you find one you liked? They’re all so cute, aren’t they? Baby outfits are designed with ease of wear in mind, which is a big help for parents, too.

If you’d like to try making one yourself, definitely give it a go!
