[High-pitched warning!] Songs with high notes that are hard to sing

The Japanese music scene is known for having a relatively low emphasis on groove, but an unusually large number of high-pitched songs.

In particular, since Japan has finally started earnestly incorporating overseas music in recent years, the overall level of songs has risen dramatically.

With that in mind, this time we’ve picked out Japanese songs that are on the higher side.

From songs with a wide vocal range, to tracks that have pinpoint high parts, to songs that stay in the high register throughout, we selected from a broad set of perspectives—so be sure to find the tracks that suit you!

[High notes caution!] Very high songs that are hard to sing (141–150)

Goodbye DeclarationChinozo

Chinozo is a Vocaloid producer from the Kansai region.

With the song “Goodbye Declaration,” they gained nationwide popularity and achieved the first-ever 100 million views on YouTube for a Vocaloid track.

This piece is also known for its extremely challenging high notes.

While the overall range isn’t consistently high, the chorus reaches remarkable heights.

Because it’s sung by a Vocaloid, it can be hard to gauge, but in most cases you’ll need to use falsetto.

Fortunately, there aren’t any long sustained notes, so give it a try!

Giga, known as a former member of REOL, is a Vocaloid producer.

Giga has been recognized since the REOL days for stylish compositions, and “Beyond the way ft.

Miku, Rin, Len” especially showcases Giga’s sleek musicality.

While the track features many low-end parts, the chorus includes very high notes.

The pitch changes are also quite abrupt, so it’s fair to say the song demands solid vocal ability.

Give it a try!

Suisei Hoshimachi, a singer who represents hololive.

Lately, her collaboration with Kuzuha from Nijisanji has been a hot topic in streaming and the VTuber scene.

Among her works, the one I especially recommend is Moonlight.

It’s not an extremely difficult piece, but falsetto appears throughout.

In addition, it incorporates R&B elements, so applied techniques like riffs and runs are also needed.

If you’re confident in singing soft high notes, definitely give it a try.

Mrs.

GREEN APPLE’s new song “Heaven.” When it comes to Mrs.

GREEN APPLE, Motoki Omori’s high-tone voice is arguably the most striking feature, and this track makes full use of his upper register throughout.

In addition to extremely high mixed voice and falsetto, the song even opens with a very low phrase.

The low part is brief, but the overall vocal range of the piece is exceptionally wide, making it no exaggeration to call this an extraordinarily difficult song.

AdventureYOASOBI

This is YOASOBI’s 17th digital-only single, released in February 2023.

At first listen, it may sound like a very cute song—seemingly far removed from the “cool” theme of this article—but once you actually try singing it, you’ll realize it’s extremely challenging vocally.

Throughout the entire song, it’s important to sing with a tone that clearly resonates with rich upper overtones, and to skillfully switch between a soft high falsetto and a light, chest-voice high tone.

Also, maintaining precise rhythm is likely crucial for capturing the feel of the original track.

A band known for many difficult high-tone phrases, TK from Ling tosite sigure.

While all of their works could be considered challenging, the one I especially recommend as a particularly tough piece is Fantastic Magic.

The hardest point of this song is, without a doubt, the chorus.

The range is mid1E to hiG#, which is still better compared to unravel, but almost the entire chorus sits at hiE or above.

Since the chorus is composed almost entirely of high-tone vocals, by the time you finish singing, the strain on your temples and throat will be immense—but I encourage you to give it a try.

Among TK from Ling tosite sigure’s songs, the masterpiece “unravel” is renowned for its exceptional difficulty.

Known as the theme song for the popular anime Tokyo Ghoul, many people may have discovered it through Ado’s cover as well.

The most challenging aspects of this song are, above all, its vocal range and expressive breadth.

The range spans an extraordinarily wide mid2 A# to hihi A#, with repeated hi G notes in the chorus.

On top of that, it demands a wide variety of vocal techniques, including scream-like phrases and trembling lines that make use of whisper voice.

Its level of difficulty is among the highest even within Japanese rock.
