[Enjoyable Solo Activities for Adults] How to Enjoy Time at Home (1–10)
DIY

Do you know the TV show where model Izumi Mori takes on DIY projects? She skillfully handles her own tools like an electric drill and a jigsaw, and she can easily make things about the size of a cupboard.
These days, home improvement stores have an amazing selection of DIY goods, so I think it’s a great time for beginners to give it a try! Lots of people enjoy DIY with items from 100-yen shops, and the term “DIY girls” has even become trendy lately.
They say even amateurs can turn a tatami room into a hardwood-floor room by imitating what they see—truly the spirit of “you can do it if you try.” If you live in a rental, hammering nails into the walls is a no-go, but some people build pseudo-walls and the like.
How about starting with small items first?
Certification acquisition

You’ve probably been seeing “get certified” a lot lately in newspaper inserts and TV commercials—it feels within reach, but somehow you haven’t taken the plunge, right? The reason we’re seeing so many ads is that lots of people are using their time at home during the restrictions to work on certifications.
Why not start something too? There are qualifications that can lead to future jobs, like Medical Office Administration and Pharmacy Assistant; ones for self-improvement, like Practical Ballpoint Pen Calligraphy and Color Coordination; and ones to expand your hobbies, like Nail Technician and Cleaning Specialist.
Even a quick search turns up tons of options! Some certifications even qualify for subsidies, so if you’re thinking about getting one, start by doing a little research!
3D puzzle

Speaking of the old days, “killing time” used to mean doing jigsaw puzzles, right? I think many people still try them when they find some free time, but you probably don’t have space to display that many.
For those people, I recommend 3D puzzles.
They’re also called three-dimensional puzzles, and as you assemble the pieces, you end up with a three-dimensional result.
There are cute character versions for kids and simpler ones too, but if you’re an adult with time on your hands, why not challenge yourself with a grand project like a castle, or one with mechanisms and moving parts?
Watch series titles

If you’re usually too busy to find a solid block of time to watch TV or DVDs, how about binge-watching a “series” now that you’ve got some time at home? For those who want to explore the world of classic cinema, the James Bond series is highly recommended.
You can compare the coolness of the actors who have played 007 over the years—Roger Moore and Sean Connery—or appreciate how Daniel Craig’s Bond, brimming with rugged charm, was an absolutely perfect fit.
Watching them all together lets you feel the franchise’s history.
For Japanese films, the Otoko wa Tsurai yo (Tora-san) series might be the way to go.
K-dramas, Netflix—you might not be able to stop once you start!
self nail

There are qualifications like the JNA Gel Nail Certification Exam and the JNEC Manicurist Certification Exam, among others, and it’s often said that having them gives you an advantage when job hunting.
However, you don’t need any qualifications for “self nail,” where you enjoy doing your own nails! Take some relaxing time to have fun with nails.
Stores like 100-yen and 300-yen shops carry lots of nail goods.
One of the best parts of self nail is that even the time spent picking out those items is enjoyable! It could be fun for junior high and high school girls to get together and decorate each other’s nails, too! It’s especially recommended for rainy days when you can’t go out.
Yoga and strength training

When we usually say “yoga,” we’re often referring to the most orthodox style, Ashtanga Yoga.
There are many types of yoga—Bikram Yoga, Hatha Yoga, and so on—with various schools and practices branching out.
If you really get into Power Yoga, it can even connect to strength training.
If you want to work up a sweat and lose weight, I recommend Hot Yoga.
It also sounds fun to go shopping for a yoga mat that suits your taste.
You can attend a yoga class, and there are also plenty of videos online that introduce yoga you can do at home.
Find a good way to make yoga part of your life and enjoy your time at home with a smile.
smoked

What was the first smoked food you ever ate? For me, it was a smoked egg.
I remember being a kid and not quite getting used to that distinctive flavor, eating it with a wry smile.
But once you’re an adult, that aroma and taste start to feel refined.
Make the most of your time at home and try your hand at smoking foods.
Smoking chips from major brands like LOGOS and SOTO are sold for around 500 yen for 500 grams.
You can even find budget options at 100-yen shops.
With a wooden box or a frying pan, you can enjoy smoking foods at home without a special smoker.
Start by smoking your favorites—cheese, sausages, fish fillets, and more.
