Hifumin, a.k.a.

Hifumi Kato, who now appears on TV almost daily as a legend of the shogi world, shares a similar nickname with Fumio Otsuka, a master of folk music who is known in the folk scene as “Fumin.” In the song Aizu-Bandaisan, the mountain is praised as a “treasure mountain” because it used to be an iron-producing area.

Later, an eruption created the Goshikinuma (Five-Colored Ponds) and brought forth hot springs—truly making it a treasure mountain.

Song of the Hot SpringsKanade Meina

It sings about hot springs from both a child’s and an adult’s perspective.

It feels like a song that might have just bubbled up while soaking in a hot spring, and it seems hot springs really let your mind unwind and feel free.

The refrain “onsen, onsen~” pleasantly lingers in your ears.

The singer of this song is Chiyoko Shimakura before her debut, likely around 1957 (Showa 32).

Since her debut song was “Kono Yo no Hana,” this is quite a treasure.

Tendo Hot Spring Town OndoHoshikawa Eiko

Tendo City is located in the eastern part of Yamagata Prefecture and is a town of shogi and hot springs, symbolized by the adjacent Mt.

Maizuru.

The original folk song “Tendo Kouta” was passed down by geisha at banquets starting in 1952, but it gradually fell out of use over time.

To help promote the city as a tourist destination, “Tendo Yunomachi Kouta” was created.

The shamisen played by geisha in a hot spring town really has a charming atmosphere, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, the okiya with geisha who performed like this was dissolved in 2010.

Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture is said to be one of Japan’s three most famous hot springs, but what’s nice about the kouta songs is that, rather than talking about medicinal benefits and such, they sing about everyday life—like couples getting along well, or being raised soaking in hot springs from birth.
