What we’re introducing here, however, is a “creative kanji quiz.” As the name suggests, “creative kanji” involves producing original characters by combining actual kanji and the like.

There’s even a contest hosted by The Sankei Shimbun and the Shirakawa Shizuka Institute of East Asian Characters and Culture at Ritsumeikan University, so quite a few people may have tried coming up with their own creative kanji.

For a quiz, you can use creative kanji that have actually won awards, or you can intentionally use original creations devised by the quizmaster.
