Recommended classic tracks of Japanese reggae: Japanese reggae songs that resonate with the heart
A must-hear collection of classic tracks for fans of Japanese reggae—“Japa-reggae.”
This includes reggae-influenced pop that was popular in Jamaica from the 1960s to the 1980s, and the evolution into dancehall reggae, which helped take root in Japan thanks to RANKIN TAXI—often called the father of Japanese reggae—continuing his Kansai radio program “Natty Jamaica.”
Today, it’s loved as a culture that transcends time and borders.
Reggae’s open, liberating vibe and its powerful, positive musicality are truly uplifting to listen to!
Tune in with an ear for songs that wish for a bright future and celebrate everyday life.

EscapeARC-MAN

This is “Escape” by ARC-MAN, released in 2019.
He’s a reggae artist based in Osaka.
It’s a distinctive track where he delivers a message—stick to your individuality!—with clever wordplay and an upbeat flow.
As a one-of-a-kind person, you’re encouraged to keep moving forward as yourself, no matter what happens.
RiddimPETER MAN

A DJ from Naniwa who shakes every listener’s five senses with a one-of-a-kind skill.
By fusing a unique interpretation of reggae—honed through many trips to Jamaica—with his identity as a Japanese artist, he creates music that is both sophisticated and catchy.
Armed with lyrics that candidly pack in the full range of emotions using playful language, his addictive vocals strike a chord with listeners.
This track is a song filled with gratitude and love for reggae.
TAKE ME AWAY feat. AKANE & AKLODJ HAZIME

Alongside DABO and SUIKEN, DJ HAZIME was a driving force in the hip-hop scene of the 1990s.
He’s known as a highly conscientious DJ and a genius who can boss any club.
Among his works, the one I especially recommend is “TAKE ME AWAY feat.
AKANE & AKLO.” It features AKANE, a young reggae singer, and AKLO, a rapper who commands immense props.
It leans more toward reggaeton than Jamaican reggae, so even those not familiar with reggae should find it approachable.
The Power of MusicNG HEAD

The title track from the 2008 mini-album released by NG HEAD, a popular DJ representing Japanese reggae, hailing from the legendary reggae crew TOKIWA, which included artists like PUSHIM and RYO THE SKYWALKER.
The way the rhymes are laid and how they intertwine with the rhythm is incredibly satisfying.
NG HEAD’s distinctive raspy voice is another charming aspect—despite the medium tempo, it makes you really feel the power of the words.
The message about the “Power of Music” really hits home.
IG GYALBANJI

It’s not widely recognized in Japan yet, but IG is short for Instaglam.
This track tells the story of getting totally fixated on sexy selfies of gals on Instagram—so hooked you can’t get them out of your head.
Produced by Osaka-based ONEROOTS MUSIC WORKS, it delivers a sophisticated, urban, eternal-summer sound.
The riddim was crafted by none other than Backyaadie, aka TAKAFIN, unleashing a long-awaited gal segment that truly explodes!
