Start by listening to the bands introduced at the beginning of this article!

[Japanese Rock] Recommended Japanese Rock Bands (111–120)

Get Up, LucyTHEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT

Formed in 1991, the four-piece rock band THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT made their major-label debut in 1996 with a distinctive sound that fused garage, blues, punk, and more.

Known for their energetic live performances—often hitting more than 40 stops on a single tour—they also appeared at major festivals like Fuji Rock.

Yusuke Chiba’s distinctive vocals and the raw sound crafted by the entire band influenced countless fans and musicians.

Until their breakup in 2003, they were a leading presence in Japan’s rock scene.

They’re a perfect match for music fans seeking powerful rock ’n’ roll and fiery live performances.

If you want to listen to orthodox Japanese alternative rock, I recommend a band called mogari.

Each member comes from a different background, but their musical style has a solid sense of cohesion, and every track creates a high-level sonic world.

The melodies have that blend of languidness and freshness you often heard in late-2000s Japanese rock—something akin to ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION.

It goes down smoothly, making it a great pick for anyone looking to start digging into alternative rock.

In Japan’s J-rock scene, there are many bands that are closer to pop music than rock.

Of course, that reflects demand, so there’s nothing inherently wrong with it—but many people may feel dissatisfied with the scene as it is.

For those people, I recommend the band toro.

They’re a three-piece that champions the “revival of rock.” Their authentic sound holds its own against Western rock, and that’s a major part of their appeal.

Definitely give them a listen.

Orange Spiny Club is a rock band from Ibaraki Prefecture.

They’re known for their refreshing vocals and lyrical sound, and have produced many hit songs.

To experience their world, I recommend the full album “Shock” (Shougeki) and “7997,” which was used as a TV drama ending theme.

Also, when it comes to Orange Spiny Club, their performances at joint-band live shows are a hot topic.

I hope you’ll enjoy those as well.

Through the talk segments, you can also get a feel for the members’ personalities.

Kepla is drawing attention with down-to-earth lyrics that resonate with listeners and a driving, high-speed sound.

Formed in September 2020, the four-piece rock band has a youthfully evocative backstory: all members are classmates from Tokyo Metropolitan Saginomiya High School.

They made their debut in July 2021 with the mini-album “Days of Youth,” achieving a remarkable milestone as its tracks surpassed 100,000 views on YouTube.

In September 2024, they made their major-label debut with EMI Records, fully blooming with the skills they honed during their indie days.

Another appeal is their fan-centered approach: the members themselves handle merch and jacket design, keeping a close connection with their audience.

Their songs, which feel like snapshots of fleeting moments of youth, feature fresh sensibilities and lyrics that evoke real empathy, steadily growing their fanbase—especially among younger listeners.

Armed with passionate messages and a powerful sound, Sambomaster has secured a firm place in Japan’s rock scene.

Formed in 2000, this three-piece rock band is known for an energetic, emotional rock style.

They made their major debut in 2003, and their song used as the ending theme for the drama Densha Otoko became a big hit.

In 2011, they created a support song for the Great East Japan Earthquake recovery efforts, and they’ve continued to captivate audiences at numerous festivals and live shows.

In 2023, their achievements in the music world were recognized with the Miura Jun Award.

Takashi Yamaguchi’s distinctive vocals and powerful stage performances are must-see, and their lyrics—often centered on life and love—resonate with many.

They’re highly recommended for anyone looking to experience music brimming with energy and intensity.

The Brandy War Chronicles is the one that exploded thanks to their debut track, “Musica.” Despite being an ultra-new band—only six months after forming and with about a month of actual activity—the music video released on YouTube in December 2022 hit 10,000 views within a week.

Six months later, it had racked up nearly 3 million views.

After it was released on streaming platforms, it also reached No.

1 on Spotify’s Viral Chart.

Perhaps its kayō-rock-inspired sound, which doesn’t chase trends, struck a chord with listeners.
