FIVE STATE DRIVE is a ska punk band formed in 2013 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.

Centered around performances at local live houses, they steadily stepped up their game, even appearing at the large-scale festival FREEEDOM NAGOYA.

As they’ve said themselves—“some members were influenced by ’90s skacore and others not so much”—their sound gives the impression of a melodic band rooted in ska.

Their songs are powerful yet firmly grounded in ska’s rhythmic feel, and the vocalist’s tone conveys a strong sense of fun.

ORESKABAND is an all-girl ska band formed in 2003 in Sakai, Osaka.

They began activity centered around classmates from junior high school who were members of the brass band club.

In their early period, their music was notably positive and pop, capturing the unvarnished spirit of student life.

As they grew older, they broadened their musical range while maintaining ska as their core.

Through energetic live performances from the outset and various experiences—including lineup changes—they steadily built solid prowess as a ska band.

Some members have also supported other bands, making ORESKABAND indispensable when discussing ska in Japan.

TIJUANA BROOKS is a ska band formed in 1998 in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.

It’s said that THE HIDEKI, the vocalist who had been studying in the United States, was influenced by the local music scene during ska’s heyday and started the band by reaching out to his musician friends.

Their sound incorporates not only ska punk but also Oi, a subgenre of punk rock, delivering an exhilarating drive with an aggressive heft—that’s a big part of their appeal.

The brass section tends to emphasize the lower registers, which meshes with THE HIDEKI’s vocal timbre and forceful, hard-hitting delivery, powerfully underscoring the band’s intense atmosphere.

Free Kick is a band that began activities in Tomakomai, Hokkaido in 2000, centered around HIDEKI on guitar and vocals.

While steadily continuing their work amid several lineup changes, they drew major attention in 2012 by performing at HEY-SMITH’s “HAJIKETE MAZARE FESTIVAL.” Their songs are notable for atmospheric shifts and evolving structures, packing powerful, resonant low end and the light, agile tones of horns into those developments.

Even in the brisk, short tracks characteristic of ska, they incorporate various hooks and tricks to keep listeners engaged—that’s a big part of the band’s appeal.

dawnThe SKAMOTTS

Formed in 2017, the Japanese authentic ska band The SKAMOTTS has been gaining attention for their distinctive sound featuring Jamaican beats and brass harmonies.

With the motto “We just love SKA—having an absolute blast,” they deliver lively, energetic performances.

In January 2023, they released the album “Nekodamashi,” which earned high praise from DJs and selectors.

That same year, they also provided the opening theme for a new TBS Radio program, increasing their media presence.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to fully savor the charm of ska or loves fun, danceable music!

Majestics is a ska band formed in Okinawa Prefecture in 1997.

The group was founded mainly by members who gathered at Swing Dragon, a reggae bar in Nago City, Okinawa, and they expanded their activities from Okinawa to the rest of Japan and even overseas.

An important point when talking about the band is that they cherish and perform authentic ska—the roots of ska that evolved from reggae.

Their sound features a solidly layered horn section, powerful yet gentle, with a light offbeat that gives an uplifting, forward-looking feel.

Alongside that gentle lightness, the band’s mature confidence and sensual allure come through strongly, which is another part of their appeal.

MIND YOUR STEP!SNAIL RAMP

A ska punk band formed in 1995.

Their songs, which incorporated ska into the melodic hardcore sound that was sweeping Japan’s music scene at the time, gained widespread support, and for many people this band may have been their introduction to the ska punk genre.

Fusing the speed and intensity characteristic of melodic hardcore with the energy and lightness of ska, and layering catchy, pop melodies over those arrangements, their music and sound were highly polished and had a major influence on the bands that followed.
