decorative photo frame

Of course, there are plenty of summer-themed activities, and with family visiting during Obon, July and August are full of fun events.
That also means more chances to take photos.
So here’s an idea I’d like to share: decorated photo frames.
It’s a simple idea where you decorate photo frames purchased from 100-yen shops.
Using seashells and sand gives them a summery, beach-inspired vibe.
It’s perfect for preserving your summer memories.
waterbed

A great place to be in the hot summer might just be on a water bed.
The soft, bouncy surface can even remind you of being in your mother’s womb.
Why not try making your own water bed? You’ll need a vacuum storage bag, water mixed with blue paint, and some decorations to put inside the bed.
It could be fun to make little fish or mermaid accessories out of plastic sheets, too.
It’s easy to make: simply pour the colored water into the storage bag and add your decorations.
Be sure to seal the opening tightly with tape so no water leaks out.
If you use a large storage bag, you could make one big enough to lie on… just thinking about it is exciting.
Milky Way with streamers

Here’s how to make a recommended Tanabata streamer Milky Way.
Fold the origami and make slits with scissors.
Slowly open the origami and gently stretch it hole by hole.
Next, for the streamer part, cut vertical slits, then apply glue to the top section.
Once you attach the streamers to the Milky Way, it’s complete.
Try making your own original Milky Way by changing the colors of the origami and getting creative.
It’ll look even cuter if you add sparkly stickers or cut out star shapes and stick them on!
Fireworks Milk Carton Fan

On hot summer days, many older adults have probably fanned themselves with a hand fan.
Here’s a perfect summer craft idea: a handmade uchiwa (Japanese fan).
Using an empty milk carton, you can make a sturdy fan.
Cut the milk carton into a circle and tape a chopstick to the outer (printed) side to serve as the handle.
Then cut another circular piece from a milk carton and attach it on top with the white side facing outward.
Draw fireworks on a round piece of construction paper, stick it onto the fan, and you’re done.
The fireworks motif enhances the summery feel and will help older adults enjoy the sense of the season.
Summer greetings with a uchiwa (hand fan)

Here’s an idea for a “summer greeting fan” made with a unique technique using a plastic bag.
Turn a plastic bag inside out and inflate it, then apply paint or ink to its surface and press it onto a plain hand fan.
The wrinkles of the bag become patterns as they are, creating unexpected and beautiful designs.
You can freely express motifs like fireworks or flowers, and if you add a message to the finished fan, you’ll have a warm summer greeting.
The process is simple yet lets your sensibility shine, making for an enjoyable creative time.
It’s a gentle summer letter that sends both coolness and heart.
Summer greetings with shaved ice

Shaved ice topped with strawberry or melon syrup is especially delicious on a hot day, isn’t it? Some senior care facilities may also serve shaved ice as a snack.
So let’s try making a summer greeting card featuring shaved ice, one of the treats we crave in summer.
In addition to drawing shaved ice on a postcard, you can also create it using items like kitchen sponges or bubble wrap used for packing.
With a bit of creativity, you can make summer greeting cards adorned with all kinds of shaved ice designs.
Morning-glory craft with kitchen paper

We’d like to introduce a handmade activity for seniors that captures a summery vibe: “Kitchen Paper Morning Glory Craft.” Cut kitchen paper into circles, twist them, and soak them in water to soften and make them easier to work with.
When you add ink to the paper, it gently bleeds to create a beautiful gradient.
If you apply ink first and then dip it in water, you can enjoy the way the colors spread.
Soak pieces in green ink to make textured leaves as well.
Glue the morning glory flowers, leaves, and vines onto construction paper to complete a cool, vibrant piece.
Morning glories came to Japan from China and have long been cherished as a symbol of summer.
This craft is fun to make and perfect for creating summer memories.
