For Seniors: Enjoy the Rainy Season—Event Ideas Perfect for June

June often brings rainy weather and many dull, overcast days, doesn’t it?

Older adults may also find it hard to lift their spirits and may be reluctant to move their bodies.

So this time, we’re sharing some event ideas recommended for June.

We’ve gathered events you can do indoors without worrying about the weather, as well as recreational activities that allow seniors to move gently without strain.

Events tied to June observances like Father’s Day and Wagashi Day sound fun, too.

On the occasional sunny day, it could be enjoyable to go for a walk to spot seasonal plants and animals—like hydrangeas and snails—that you can only appreciate now.

Even the gloom that comes with the rainy season can turn into smiles.

We hope everyone has fun together and that the facility feels brighter and cheerier.

June is the season for changing wardrobes, isn’t it? How about putting away those thick coats, taking out your summer clothes, and having a little fashion show? It doesn’t have to be anything special—just strut down a makeshift runway to some music and walk like a model in your everyday outfits! Trying makeup you wouldn’t normally wear is also highly recommended.

June 1 is apparently “Photography Day.” It was established by the Japan Photographic Society in 1951 (Showa 26).

Thanks to the spread of mobile phones, we now live in an era where anyone can easily take and keep photos, making photography feel even more familiar.

But how about trying to take a proper, well-shot photograph? Getting your picture taken at a photo studio is great, and gathering the family for a group photo is a nice idea too.

Music appreciation

Music appreciation

Do you all usually listen to music often? Listening alone with headphones or holed up in your room is great, but how about getting together with a bunch of people and holding a music appreciation gathering? Back in elementary school, we used to go to classical concerts and have music appreciation days, right? It’s nice to listen to all kinds of genres, not just classical.

Since June 9 is Rock Day, a rock-listening party sounds like a great idea too!

June 19 is Wagashi Day, right? How about trying your hand at making traditional Japanese sweets to celebrate? I especially recommend making mizu manju.

Mizu manju are chilled dumplings made by wrapping sweet red bean paste (anko) in a translucent dough, then cooling them in cold water or in the refrigerator.

The process is fun, and it’s also great for cooling down in this hot and humid season.

Since there are quite a few steps involved, doing some prep by watching YouTube tutorials will help you make them smoothly.

June’s rainy weather can easily bring you down.

So how about lifting the mood by giving a handmade Father’s Day card? Write a heartfelt message of gratitude and love.

You could even make it like an award ceremony—have each person come to the front, read their card aloud, and then present it.

The design of the card is also important for this idea.

Whether cute or stylish, look for a card that suits your taste.

Making a rainbow garland

How about making a rainbow garland? A garland is a decoration that hangs from the ceiling.

If you decorate with a rainbow-themed garland, it should brighten up the atmosphere of your room.

And because rain evokes the time after the rainy season ends, you can enjoy a sense of the season, too.

There are many ways to make one, but it could be fun to cut out your own photos and add them to the garland.

Enjoy the process, including choosing which photos to use.

If possible, I recommend laminating the photos.

In conclusion

That was an introduction to June-themed events that seniors can also enjoy.

Even on rainy days when you feel gloomy, you’ll hear cheerful laughter, and there are activities you can take your time to enjoy indoors with focus.

It would be wonderful to hold events inspired by June’s unique commemorative days.

Please get creative and have a great time.
