For Seniors: Enjoy the Rainy Season—Event Ideas Perfect for June
June often brings rainy weather and many dull, overcast days, doesn’t it?
Older adults may also find it hard to lift their spirits and may be reluctant to move their bodies.
So this time, we’re sharing some event ideas recommended for June.
We’ve gathered events you can do indoors without worrying about the weather, as well as recreational activities that allow seniors to move gently without strain.
Events tied to June observances like Father’s Day and Wagashi Day sound fun, too.
On the occasional sunny day, it could be enjoyable to go for a walk to spot seasonal plants and animals—like hydrangeas and snails—that you can only appreciate now.
Even the gloom that comes with the rainy season can turn into smiles.
We hope everyone has fun together and that the facility feels brighter and cheerier.

Rainy season fill-in-the-blank quiz

Even during the rainy season when it’s hard to go out, you can still enjoy the seasonal vibe! This game is perfect for that.
It’s a quiz where you create blanks in parts of words related to the rainy season—like “teruteru bozu” or “snail”—and guess the letters that fit to complete the word.
By making quizzes with keywords unique to the rainy season, you not only feel the season but also stimulate cognitive function through recalling words and thinking of the correct answer.
It also sounds fun to create and exchange questions in a group activity! Give it a try for inspiration.
Hydrangea viewing

When it comes to seasonal symbols of June, many people would name hydrangeas alongside the rainy season and snails.
Just like autumn foliage, you might suddenly realize the hydrangea blooming period has already ended—so do try to visit a botanical garden on a June weekend.
Other flowers at their best in June include lilies and gardenias.
Seeing flowers that bloom in June is a lovely way to enjoy the season.
Hydrangea jelly

Some of you may be thinking about incorporating foods unique to June into your recreations or events.
In that case, I’d like to suggest hydrangea jelly.
You top a milk jelly base with jellies in colors like light blue and purple that evoke hydrangeas.
The finished dessert looks like a hydrangea, and when you eat it, you can enjoy the contrast of the two different jellies.
The method is basically the same as making regular jelly, so it’s an easy way to savor a sense of the season.
It’s also lovely to enjoy hydrangea jelly while looking at real hydrangeas.
Try making it together and enjoy how delicious it is!
Snail race

When we think of the rainy season, snails also come strongly to mind.
One reason may be that they’re used as a seasonal word that represents this time of year.
So how about trying a game with a snail motif? You can enjoy the seasonal atmosphere while playing indoors.
The idea is to place a plastic bottle on a towel and pull the towel without knocking the bottle over.
Because the towel and bottle look like a snail, it’s also called a “snail race.” Competing for the fastest time in a race format sounds fun, too.
Put newspaper balls into the umbrella

June in Japan is the rainy season, and many people associate it with umbrellas.
So here’s a game that lets you feel the season: a newspaper-ball toss.
Place an open umbrella on a chair, then throw in balls made by crumpling up newspaper.
Because umbrellas are light and flexible, the balls you toss in will bounce—this unpredictable movement is part of the fun.
Enjoy the surprising action, and you can also compete to see how many balls you can get in within a set time.
Balloon Home Run Game

June 19 is Baseball Day, you know.
Did you know that? In honor of the day, how about trying a balloon home run game? In this activity, you place a balloon on a tee and hit it far with a sponge bat.
It gets even more exciting if you set rules like “It’s a home run if it goes this far,” or “It’s a hit if it lands in this box.” By the way, the larger the balloon, the farther it tends to fly.
Prepare balloons of a good size and let everyone rack up home runs!

Frog Frisbee Game

June 6 is designated as Frog Day because the Japanese onomatopoeia “kero-kero” (ribbit) can be read from the date.
Frogs have long been beloved as creatures that let us feel the seasons.
I’d like to introduce a recreation activity themed around this commemorative frog day: the Frog Frisbee Game.
First, make a target out of cardboard with a frog motif.
Then make a cardboard frisbee and start throwing.
It might also be fun to design the target as a frog’s mouth so it looks like you’re feeding it.
