[Early Childhood Education] Sports Day craft ideas: medals, cheering flags, and wall decorations.
Sports festivals at nursery schools and kindergartens are important once-a-year events for children.
Each child practices really hard.
Here, we’ll introduce craft ideas that can create fun memories for the kids who are giving it their all!
In addition to medals and trophies, making an entrance gate, wall decorations, and cheering flags will really boost the atmosphere.
We also recommend creating them together with the children.
Let’s have kids and adults enjoy the preparations together and make lots of wonderful sports day memories!

Coaster Medal

These coaster medals are easy to make by simply combining thin cork or thick paperboard you can find at 100-yen shops with paper coasters.
The method is super simple: stack a paper coaster on a firm base like cork or cardstock, then fasten it with a stapler.
Attach a ribbon so it can be worn around the neck, and you’re done in no time.
Add a personal touch by sticking patterned origami onto the base or writing names and messages on the coaster—doing so will make the kids who receive them twice as delighted!
placard
If everyone works together to create a single piece, it will help strengthen unity leading up to the sports day.
One idea I’d like to introduce is making your own placard.
Each student adds color or draws illustrations on a single sheet of drawing paper.
Decide on a motif for each class and work backward from that to complete it.
You could use a design with lots of colors, or one that repeats the same element many times.
Adjust the design to suit the age group.
Rosette medal made of washi tape

This is a rosette-style medal made by combining parts crafted from masking tape! Make several ribbon-like pieces by rolling strips of masking tape into loops, leaving a bit of the adhesive side exposed.
Arrange them in a circle like a flower, overlapping them at the center.
Create a set of slightly smaller pieces the same way and layer them on top, then attach a circle of construction paper to the center.
Make the hanging tails of the medal with masking tape as well, and stick them to the back.
Your cute, flower-like medal is complete!
Ribbon flower medal

It’s a cute flower medal with ribbon decorations! First, cut two circles out of construction paper for the base.
Cut several pieces of ribbon to the same length according to the petal size you want, then curl each piece into a loop and staple it onto the base.
Fill the edge of the construction paper with the ribbon petals, and layer the second circle of construction paper in the center to finish the flower medal! To safely hand it to children, cover the exposed staples on the back by attaching another layer of construction paper or masking tape over them.
flags of all nations
One idea for making a string of international flags is to use washi (traditional Japanese paper).
Try dyeing the washi or drawing illustrations on it to finish them.
When you hang many of them in a row, they should create a lively atmosphere.
You could also make flags for each class instead of international flags.
Feel free to change the design to your liking! Another appeal of this project is that you can work on it together with children.
It could be fun to have each person design one sheet.
Encourage them to use their imagination—self-portraits, animals, anything they like.
medal with photo

A medal with a face photo, made using the kids’ best-shot pictures.
Cut slits in the side of a paper cup and open it up, then trim each corner.
Rub with a pen or a chopstick to curl the edges, gather the opened sections toward the center, and tape them in place to create a flower-shaped medal.
Add color with markers, attach a ribbon, and finally stick the face photo in the center to complete a personalized, original medal.
You can already picture the delighted faces of the children receiving a medal the teacher made just for them!
Animal Medal

These are animal medals that bring to mind the beaming smiles of children receiving them! Make vertical, horizontal, and diagonal creases in the origami paper, fold the four corners toward the center, then open it up and continue folding to form the medal shape.
When folding the four corners to the back, slightly fold the top section as well to give it an animal-like face shape.
Glue the folded parts, attach pieces like the nose and ears cut from construction paper or origami, and finally draw in the eyes to complete a cute animal medal! Add adorable decorations like ribbons or hats, and the children will be even more delighted!
