Childcare: Recommended program ideas for a sports day

Childcare: Recommended program ideas for a sports day
Last updated:

Sports day at nursery and kindergarten is something to look forward to.

Creating the program is fun, but sometimes it’s hard to come up with ideas.

Beyond the entrance, exit, and warm-up exercises, it’s also important to plan a variety of events.

Here, we’ve gathered ideas for a sports day that kids can enjoy.

Consider activities like relays, obstacle courses, and dances that match the children’s ages.

Create a program that teachers and children can enjoy together, and make it a wonderful sports day where everyone smiles!

[Childcare] Recommended Program Ideas for Sports Day (1–10)

[Infant Play] Animal Train

Animal Train [Kids Dance Channel] Elementary school, kindergarten, easy dance, nursery school, sports day, recital
[Infant Play] Animal Train

A recommended activity for infant classes is “Animal Train.” The song describes various animals—such as rabbits, mice, and crocodiles—getting on a train called the Animal Train.

Have the children in the infant class pretend to be the animals boarding the train and dance along.

It’s best not to include complicated choreography; instead, incorporate movements that evoke the animals that appear.

For example, for a rabbit, place both hands on the head to make ears; for a crocodile, use outstretched arms to make a big crocodile mouth.

Rather than focusing on dancing precisely, emphasize doing something in time with the music.

Entrance: Checheccori

Entrance: Checheccori

A recommended song for the entrance scene is “Che Che Kule.” It’s a Ghanaian folk song that’s well known in Japan, having appeared as parody versions in commercials and various other media.

Set to a catchy, pop-like melody, singers take turns echoing the lyrics sung by the person before them.

To match the song’s lively vibe, have the children make a spirited entrance, moving along to the music.

Once they reach the waiting area, get them to dance to the beat or sing along with the teacher to build excitement before the events begin.

[Warm-Up Exercises] Lively Sports Day

“Lively Sports Day” — Let’s dance together to a fun routine perfect for sports days at kindergartens and nursery schools! (Kindergarten/Nursery/ Sports Day)
[Warm-Up Exercises] Lively Sports Day

Before a sports day, you need to do warm-up exercises to avoid injuries, right? For that warm-up, we recommend “Waiwai Sports Day.” Even though warm-ups are important, fun music makes children more eager to participate.

This song is perfect because it’s full of a bright, energetic vibe! With choreography that lets kids really move their bodies—adding knee bends, fully stretching arms and legs, and more—let’s help them get properly prepared for the events to come while having fun.

[Parent-Child Event] All right! It’s lunchtime.

[Parent-Child Event] All right! It’s lunchtime.

“Alright! It’s School Lunch Time” is a recommended parent–child team activity to do with guardians.

Using a large rice paddle made from cardboard, participants pick up school-lunch ingredients placed along the course, balance them on the paddle, and carry them to the lunch plate.

Draw pictures on the plate that correspond to each ingredient, and have participants place each item on the matching picture.

Once one ingredient is delivered, pass the paddle to the next parent–child pair like a relay.

The game ends when all ingredients are arranged on the plate.

To enhance the atmosphere, it’s also fun to have participants wear aprons and triangular kerchiefs.

[Game] Doraemon

[Game] Doraemon

How about having the kids dance to a song from Doraemon that they love? “Doraemon” by Gen Hoshino—used as the theme song for the film Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Treasure Island and as the opening theme for the Doraemon TV anime—is perfect.

Familiar songs are easy for children to get used to and make dancing more enjoyable! It’s also a great idea to have them wear costumes inspired by Doraemon and the various characters from the anime.

There are plenty of dance videos with simple choreography for young children on video sites, so be sure to use them as a reference.

[Game] Rocket Penguin

Rocket Penguin! A fun, cute dance recommended by childcare workers (kindergarten/nursery)
[Game] Rocket Penguin

Let’s have the kids enjoy dancing to “Rocket Penguin,” featuring an adorable penguin! Penguins can’t fly.

But this song tells the story of a penguin who just can’t give up on the dream of flying, gliding over the ice as if soaring through the sky.

Invite the children to become that super-cute penguin and dance! Try adding movements that match the lyrics—like sliding over the ice and then taking off into the sky.

circuit

One event that lets parents feel their children’s growth is the circuit.

Like an obstacle course, children make their way through various challenges, but the goal isn’t competition; it’s for parents to see what their children have learned to do.

They might do a forward roll on a mat, roll their bodies, walk on a balance beam, or crawl through a hula hoop…

Avoid including overly complex skills; instead, use activities that are a natural extension of the play they usually do.
