For Mother’s Day crafts! A bouquet of carnations

Here’s how to make a carnation using origami.

Prepare two 15 cm sheets of red origami paper and crumple each into a ball once to add texture.

After the wrinkles form, open them up and fold both sheets into quarters (twice into a square).

With the corner that will be the center of the flower positioned at the top left, roundly cut the edge from the bottom right toward the top left.

Use pinking shears to make a zigzag edge.

Once cut, pleat the side opposite the zigzag edge, and stack three layers to complete the flower! Combine it with a stem and leaves made from construction paper to finish the carnation.

Just combine identical parts! This is a carnation made with origami.

To make one carnation, you’ll need four 7.5 cm sheets of origami paper.

Use three for the petals and the remaining one for the leaf.

First, fold the paper into a triangle.

Next, overlap the left and right sides to fold it in half, crease well, and open it.

Fold the left and right corners up to meet the top corner and crease; then, using those creases as guides, fold up the bottom edge on both the left and right from the center line.

Turn the paper over, and this time fold both side edges in to meet the center line.

That completes one part.

Stack and glue three parts together, then attach the leaf made with the same steps underneath to finish the carnation.

Change colors and patterns to make a bouquet—perfect for a gift.

If you’re considering a practical gift, how about carnation coasters? Make the carnations as paper cutouts using origami, then sandwich them between the lid of a clear cup to turn them into coasters.

Adding sparkly roll stickers around the edge will make them look even more festive.

They’re very easy to make yet look great, and because they can be used every day, they’re perfect for gifts.

The impression changes depending on the cutout design, making it an idea kids will want to make over and over.

It’s also a fun way to practice using scissors.

Let’s make carnations using paper towels and a straw.

Prepare two sheets of paper towel, draw patterns with water-based pens, then mist water over them to create a bleeding effect.

The patterns will blur away, so anything is fine! Once the paper towels are dry, cut them into quarter-size pieces, stack them, and accordion-fold.

Tie the center with a rubber band, cut both ends into zigzags, then separate the layers one by one to form the petals.

Hold a straw to the base, secure it together with several petals using masking tape to make the stem, and you’ve got a perfect Mother’s Day gift!

Carnation Pop-up Card

It’s a lovely idea where a carnation blossoms when you open the card.

It’s perfect for a Mother’s Day message card.

After cutting construction paper into a circle, fold it in half three times to make creases.

Once you’ve made the creases, open it up, then use the creases to fold it in half just once.

In this state, round off the corners along both sides at the folded edge.

Repeat this process while changing which creases you use, transforming the circle into a flower shape.

Once you have the petals, trim the edges into a jagged pattern to make it look like a carnation.

Of the eight petals you’ve made, adhere the two on the left and right to a card folded in half, and the flower will bloom when it’s opened.

Handprint carnation

How about sending an adorable handprint carnation for Mother’s Day that even very young children—who can’t use scissors or glue yet—can make? Little kids’ hands are as charming as flowers.

Trace those cute little hands and decorate them sweetly.

First, press the child’s hand into paper clay to make a mold.

Spread the palm and take the impression; paint it red and it will look just like a small carnation.

Before the clay dries, embed sparkly pieces or colorful beads, and use a green-painted chopstick as the stem to finish it off.

You can also add a photo or a ribbon for an extra touch.

How about a message wreath made from origami? Fold an origami square into a triangle, then fold the top corner down to the base to make a part; use four of these parts to form the base, and attach a piece of construction paper on the back with the words “Thank you always.” Then add a carnation made from origami, and your message wreath is complete.

It’s an easy yet heartfelt gift that conveys your gratitude and also serves as a present.

For Father’s Day, you could swap the carnation for a rose.

Turn your words into a gift and deliver them to someone special.
