Under the autumn sky, cosmos sway their petals and bloom beautifully—perfect as a theme for autumn crafts.

So this time, we’re introducing craft ideas featuring cosmos.

We’ve gathered many ideas that can be enjoyed by children from infants to kindergarteners with a bit of adjustment—some use techniques that let kids enjoy the texture of materials, while others are perfect for practicing scissor and glue skills with their fingertips.

Please use these as a reference for your autumn crafting.

Since these ideas nurture children’s imagination and allow them to enjoy free expression, we refer to them as “seisaku” (craft-making) in the main text.

Cosmos flowers made of tissue paper

Kimie Gangi’s September wall display: “Cosmos flowers made with tissue paper.”
Cosmos flowers made of tissue paper

If you make cosmos flowers out of tissue paper, they’ll turn out soft and cute.

Accordion-fold the tissue paper, cut it in half, and then fold each piece in half.

On the side opposite the folded center, snip jagged cuts; when you open it up, you’ll have cosmos petals.

Roll a small ball from yellow tissue paper and stick it in the center of the cosmos you just made, and it’s complete.

Make lots and stick them on the wall, and a cosmos field will appear in your room! Adjust the parts that involve cutting, and other steps as needed on the teacher’s side according to the children’s ages.

Cosmos flowers with paper cups and paint

Let’s transform a paper cup into a cosmos flower! Make several large cuts from the rim down toward the bottom of the cup.

After cutting, spread the segments outward, paint them with colors to create the cosmos petals, and let them dry.

Once the paint is dry, glue a crumpled piece of yellow tissue paper onto the cup’s bottom (the flower center) to finish.

You can stick the flowers onto a large sheet of construction paper or poster paper and draw in stems and leaves afterward.

It’s also great to skip the stems and leaves and cover a wall with lots of cosmos flowers made by the children.

Adjust who makes the cuts in the paper cups depending on the children’s ages—teachers may need to handle this step.

Cosmos Flowers with Cardboard Stamps

How about using cardboard as stamps to create cosmos flowers? First, the teacher can cut the cardboard into cosmos shapes.

At the same time, cut out round shapes about the same size as the cosmos shapes, and glue them together.

Next, attach the cardboard to the bottom of a plastic bottle, and your cardboard cosmos stamp is ready.

Then let the children freely stamp on drawing paper to create a lovely cosmos field! For the center of each cosmos, add a yellow round sticker, and you’re done.

Cosmos flowers recommended for practicing with scissors

Let’s try a cosmos flower craft that also lets kids practice using scissors! Prepare construction paper or origami paper sized so that a single cut with scissors can go from one edge to the other, and draw guideline lines for the children to follow with their scissors.

Once that’s ready, have the children cut along the guidelines to make long, thin strips of paper.

Use four of the cut strips, combine and glue them to form the petals of a cosmos flower.

Finally, glue a small circle cut from construction paper or origami in the center, and it’s done! It’s recommended that the teacher prepare these small circles in advance as well.

After gluing everything onto a sheet of construction paper, have the children draw the stem and leaves with pens or crayons.

Prepare one sheet of origami paper and fold it in an accordion (zigzag) pattern.

Be careful to keep the fold widths even.

Use scissors to trim the tip to form the cosmos petals.

Take three petal pieces, fold along the lines, and assemble them to create a 3D cosmos.

Make four of these and glue them together to complete the flower.

It’s also fun to create an autumn scene by making a whole cosmos field—you’ll really feel the season’s atmosphere!

In conclusion

We introduced some craft ideas featuring cosmos flowers that are perfect for autumn.

There were plenty of fun ideas that even infants can enjoy.

Since some children may have never seen cosmos flowers, try taking them on a walk to observe them, or use picture books and field guides so they can build a clear image.

It’s also a great idea to let them use their favorite colors—not just pink or red—when making their crafts.

Adding red dragonflies or fallen leaves can enhance the autumn atmosphere even more.

Try different arrangements and enjoy creating together.
