Recommended for autumn! Easy-to-make cosmos craft ideas

When you think of flowers that bloom in autumn, many people probably picture cosmos.

Under the autumn sky, cosmos sway their petals and bloom beautifully—perfect as a theme for autumn crafts.

So this time, we’re introducing craft ideas featuring cosmos.

We’ve gathered many ideas that can be enjoyed by children from infants to kindergarteners with a bit of adjustment—some use techniques that let kids enjoy the texture of materials, while others are perfect for practicing scissor and glue skills with their fingertips.

Please use these as a reference for your autumn crafting.

Since these ideas nurture children’s imagination and allow them to enjoy free expression, we refer to them as “seisaku” (craft-making) in the main text.

Cosmos in paper cutting

This is a way to make a cosmos flower by simply folding origami and cutting along the outline.

Fold the origami paper in half into a triangle, then fold it in half again, repeating until you’ve folded it three times, and sketch the shape of the petals.

Since you’ll draw the petal outline with a pencil, it’s best to fold with the white side facing out.

The jagged tips of the petals are a bit intricate, but once you cut and unfold it… you’ve got a cosmos flower! Kirigami, where the shape becomes something completely different when opened, is a highly recommended craft that sparks children’s creativity.

Cosmos flowers with toilet paper rolls and finger stamping

How about using toilet paper rolls and the children’s fingers as stamps to create cute cosmos flowers? First, make several cuts in a toilet paper roll and bend the cut sections outward.

Dip it in paint and stamp it onto drawing paper—cosmos petals will appear! Then use finger stamping to fill in the empty center, and your cosmos is complete.

Afterwards, use pens or crayons to draw the stem and leaves where you made the flower.

If the teacher makes the cuts in the toilet paper rolls beforehand, the activity will go more smoothly.

Cosmos flowers colored with a sponge dauber

Here’s an idea for making cosmos flowers using a tampo (a dabber) that lets you have fun painting by dabbing to bring out color.

Stuff cotton into gauze, secure it with a rubber band, dip it into watercolor paint thinned with water, and then dab it onto paper.

The strength of your dabs changes the intensity of the color, which is part of the fun.

Cut the colored construction paper into long, thin strips, layer them in a radial pattern, and glue them down.

Stick a yellow piece of origami paper or a round sticker in the center, and your cosmos is complete.

Try making cosmos in lots of different colors!

Let’s try making autumn flowers—cosmos—using paper plates and a sponge.

As preparation, cut the center of a paper plate into the shape of a cosmos flower.

After that, simply use a sponge to dab the cosmos shapes onto construction paper.

You can reflect the real colors of cosmos, such as pink and yellow, or choose any colors you like for a fun twist.

Layering the flowers little by little will create a more vibrant finish.

Cosmos with straw stamps

Here’s an idea for making a small, cute cosmos field using a straw.

Cut eight evenly spaced slits into the end of a straw so the tips become the cosmos petals, then crease them so they fold outward.

Dab a little watered-down paint onto the opened tips and stamp them onto paper.

The key points are not to cut the slits too deep and to thin the paint to a nice, loose consistency.

With those two tips, you’ll get an easy-to-use stamp.

Draw the cosmos leaves and stems with crayons.

Cosmos wreath

Let’s make a cosmos wreath to brighten up autumn! An easy method is to use a paper plate.

How about cutting out the center of the paper plate and then sticking cosmos flowers made from origami around the edge? It’s a good idea to add color to the paper plate in advance using tools like paint daubers.

To make the cosmos flowers, combine four narrow, small strips of origami paper for each flower.

The teacher can prepare the paper plates with the centers cut out and the origami paper cut into small pieces, and then have the children do the coloring, assemble the cosmos flowers, and glue them onto the wreath.

If you mix in patterned origami paper, it will look even more festive!

Cosmos in a Paper Cup

A colorful, pop-style cosmos wall decoration made from paper cups.

The base of the cosmos comes together in no time—just cut open a paper cup! Make several slits along the side of the cup, then spread it out to form a flower shape.

You can color the petals after opening it, but if you attach colored paper to the side while it’s still a cup and then cut it open, the result will be even neater.

Add your own patterns with crayons, pens, or stickers to create your original cosmos flowers!
